Everett nodded once, hard.
“Her name was Lily.”
The name landed between them like a prayer.
Claire swallowed. “I’m sorry.”
Everett looked away, blinking fast. “It was a long time ago.”
But his face said it had happened yesterday.
Junie reached into the tiny pocket of her denim shorts and pulled out something folded and worn. Claire frowned. She had never seen it before.
It was a small square of paper.
Junie held it up to Everett.
“She said you lost this.”
Everett’s face went completely still.
Claire’s heart began to pound again, but differently this time.
