“When?”

Claire hesitated.

Victoria’s voice was low.

“Don’t.”

Claire looked at her.

For the first time that night, Claire understood something.

Victoria wasn’t protecting her anymore.

Victoria was protecting herself.

Claire wiped her face.

“Three days after the miscarriage, Victoria came to my apartment.”

Victoria stiffened.

Daniel turned.

Claire continued.

“She found me sitting on the bathroom floor with the ultrasound pictures.”

“Claire, stop.”

“No.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“You’re emotional.”

“I have been emotional for eleven weeks.”

Claire’s voice grew stronger.

“You told me not to tell him.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

Victoria shook her head.

“I told you to wait until you were stable.”

“You told me Daniel would leave.”

“I said you were vulnerable.”

“You said he had been talking about wanting children for years, and that if I told him before the wedding season ended, I would lose everything.”

Victoria’s face went white.

Daniel took one step toward her.

“You said that?”

Victoria’s composure cracked.

“She was falling apart.”

“And your solution was what?”

Claire answered.

“The padding.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Claire.”

“You ordered it.”

Daniel’s expression became almost blank.

“What?”

Claire’s voice shook.

“She found a prosthetic pregnancy belly online. At first I said no.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“But then every day passed, and telling you became harder. Everyone kept congratulating me. Your mother brought baby clothes. You kept smiling every time you touched my stomach.”

Daniel looked down.

Claire whispered, “And I kept thinking one more day.”

The ballroom was completely still.

“One more day before I destroyed your happiness.”

Daniel raised his eyes.

Claire could see tears now.

“That happiness wasn’t real.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t protect me.”

“I know.”

“You protected yourself from watching me hurt.”

Claire broke.

“Yes.”

The word came out like a confession.

“Yes. I did.”

Daniel wiped his eyes with one hand.

Claire stepped closer.

“I was a coward.”

He didn’t respond.

“I thought if I could keep the world exactly the same for one more day, maybe I wouldn’t have to face what happened.”

She looked down at the fake curve beneath her dress.

“And then one day became a week.”

Her voice cracked.

“A week became a month.”

Daniel said nothing.

“And eventually I didn’t know how to tell the truth without losing everyone.”

Sophie’s small voice came from behind Laura.

“You should still tell the truth.”

Every adult in the room turned toward her.

Sophie looked suddenly uncertain.

Laura knelt.

“Honey…”

But Daniel stared at the little girl.

Strangely, it was the first thing anyone had said all night that seemed to reach him.

He nodded once.

“You’re right.”

Then he looked at Claire.

“I need to leave.”

Claire’s face collapsed.

“Daniel.”

“I can’t do this here.”

“Please don’t walk away.”

“I’m not promising anything.”

He backed away.

Claire reached for him instinctively.

He avoided her hand.

Daniel turned and walked out of the ballroom.

Claire stood in the center of the wedding reception, surrounded by hundreds of people and feeling completely alone.

Victoria moved toward her.

“Claire, we need to control this.”

Claire slowly turned.

There it was again.

Control.

Manage.

Explain.

For eleven weeks, Claire had listened to Victoria because Victoria always seemed certain.

Now Claire saw what certainty had cost her.

She stepped away.

“No.”

Victoria frowned.

“What?”

Claire looked at her.

“No more controlling anything.”

And for the first time since Sophie had spoken, Victoria looked truly afraid.

PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE LIE

Daniel did not answer Claire’s calls that night.

Or the next morning.

By Sunday afternoon, their apartment felt unfamiliar.

Claire sat on the edge of the couch staring at the framed sonogram photograph Daniel had placed beside the television.

The image was from the pregnancy they had lost.

The last real image of their child.

For weeks, Claire had been unable to look at it without feeling the lie pressing around her.

Now the lie was gone.

And the grief it had hidden was everywhere.

She had removed the pregnancy padding in the hotel bathroom after Daniel left.

She had stared at herself in the mirror afterward.

Flat stomach.

Gold dress.

Red eyes.

No illusion left.

Claire had expected relief.

Instead, she felt hollow.

At 4:12 p.m., someone knocked.

She knew it wouldn’t be Daniel.

Daniel had a key.

Claire opened the door.

Sophie stood outside with Laura.

Claire blinked.

Laura gave an apologetic smile.

“I hope this isn’t a bad time.”

Claire looked down at Sophie.

The girl held a small white paper bag.

“What’s that?”

Sophie looked embarrassed.

“Cookies.”

Claire almost cried.

She stepped aside.

Laura and Sophie entered.

For several minutes, no one mentioned the ballroom.

Laura made coffee.

Sophie placed three cookies on a plate with tremendous seriousness.

Finally, Claire sat across from her niece.

“Sophie.”

The little girl looked up.

“I need you to know something.”

Sophie waited.
