The Locked Gate of Harlan County

The morning mist still clung to the rolling Appalachian hills of Harlan County as the sharp rattle of a heavy iron chain echoed through the quiet valley. Positioned right across the gravel access road leading into the old hollow was a massive black steel security gate, reinforced with thick chains, a padlocked shackle, and bright red "NO TRESPASSING" warning placards.

Standing on the county road side, furiously pointing at the locked gate, was Evelyn Cross. Dressed in a tailored violet blazer, charcoal trousers, and designer loafers, she clutched an expensive leather handbag while glaring at the obstacle as if her sheer rage could melt steel. On her lapel, she conspicuously wore a small gold community association pin, acting as though the authority of the entire county rested on her shoulders.

"Cut this lock!" Evelyn screamed, her voice shrill and demanding. "Thirty-eight families use this road to access their properties! This is an outrage, and I demand immediate access!"
