This was not only about him.
This was how fear moved in the building.
Vanessa pointed toward the entrance.
“You need to leave.”
“I’m afraid that won’t be possible.”
That line changed the air.
Vanessa’s chin lifted.
“Security.”
Maya hesitated.
Daniel looked at her gently.
“You don’t need to do that.”
Vanessa snapped, “Yes, she does.”
Maya’s hand hovered over the phone.
Daniel kept his voice low.
“I would not make this your mistake, Maya.”
Maya froze.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Do not intimidate my receptionist.”
“I’m not. I’m warning her not to take responsibility for your assumption.”
A small ring of silence spread around them.
Employees who had pretended to be busy were no longer pretending well. A man by the elevator held a coffee cup halfway to his mouth. Two analysts near the wall looked at each other. The security guard at the far desk shifted his stance but did not yet approach.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You walked into this building without an appointment, claimed to own it, and now you’re giving warnings to my staff.”
“I’m giving her information you refused to verify.”
“You don’t get to lecture me in my own lobby.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Your own lobby?”
Her face hardened.
The phrase had slipped out naturally.
That mattered too.
“It is my responsibility,” she said.
“Then be responsible.”
The words landed cleanly.
Too cleanly.
Vanessa’s cheeks colored.
“You people always think confidence can substitute for credentials.”
Daniel tilted his head.
“You people?”
Maya’s eyes flickered.
Vanessa heard herself too late, but pride pushed her forward.
“Men who walk in from nowhere with stories. Men who think a serious company is impressed by mystery.”
Daniel’s hand tightened slightly around the old leather folder.
Inside were copies of the signed transfer papers, board acknowledgment, regulatory filings, and a sealed letter from Halden-Ross president Samuel Alden confirming the morning announcement. He could have opened it. He could have ended the scene immediately. He could have watched Vanessa’s face change and felt the old satisfaction of a room flipping.
But he did not.
He wanted to see how far she would go when no one stopped her.
“Security,” Vanessa said again.
The guard began walking.
Daniel turned slightly toward him.
“Please call Mr. Alden before touching this situation.”
The guard slowed.
Vanessa turned on him.
“Do your job.”
The guard looked uneasy.
“What’s your name?” Daniel asked.
The guard swallowed.
“Ray.”
