They approached quietly.

No security guards.

No public spectacle.

One of them, Karen Ellis, spoke softly.

“Victoria, we need your badge for the evening.”

Victoria stared at her.

“This is absurd.”

“Your administrative leave begins immediately.”

“My what?”

“Paid administrative leave pending an independent workplace conduct review.”

Victoria looked at Walter.

“This is you.”

Walter did not answer.

“Say it.”

He remained quiet.

“You did this.”

Walter finally spoke.

“No.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“No?”

“You did this.”

Her eyes hardened.

Then, suddenly, something in her broke.

Not dramatically.

No screaming.

No thrown objects.

Her shoulders simply dropped.

For the first time that night, Victoria Collins looked tired.

Older.

Human.

She removed her badge.

Karen accepted it.

Victoria turned toward Emily.

Her lips parted.

No apology came.

Not yet.

She walked away.

The regular elevator doors closed behind her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then voices started at once.

“Who is he?”

“What just happened?”

“Did the board suspend her?”

“Walter, are you—”

Walter raised one hand.

The room became quiet again.

“Go home.”

Nobody moved.

He almost smiled.

“That's not a mysterious executive order. It's raining, it's late, and most of you look terrible.”

A few nervous laughs escaped.

The tension broke slightly.

Employees began gathering their belongings.

Emily remained.

Walter picked up his mop.

She stepped toward him.

“Please don't do that.”

He looked at her.

“Do what?”

“Mop.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't understand anything anymore.”

Walter smiled faintly.

“That makes two of us.”

“You called the board.”

“Yes.”

“They listened.”

“Yes.”

“You walked into a restricted elevator.”

“Yes.”

“And you're still cleaning the floor.”

Walter glanced down.

“It still needs cleaning.”

Emily stared at him.

“Who are you?”

He was quiet for a moment.

“You'll know enough tomorrow.”

“That sounds like the most frustrating answer possible.”

“It was carefully selected.”

Despite everything, Emily laughed.

Then her expression fell.

“Am I fired?”

“No.”

Her eyes widened.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“How sure?”

Walter considered it.

“Quite sure.”

Emily exhaled shakily.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

She turned away, embarrassed.

Walter pretended not to notice until she had composed herself.

Then he said, “You should call your parents.”

Emily nodded.

“My mother is going to have a heart attack.”

“Try starting with ‘I still have my job.’”

“That won't help.”

Walter smiled.

Emily hesitated.

“Did I do something stupid?”

Walter studied her.

“You did something expensive.”

Her smile disappeared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means courage often costs something before anyone rewards it.”

He leaned on the mop handle.

“You risked the internship.”

“I thought I lost it.”

“You could have.”

“So was it stupid?”

Walter shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked toward the windows.

“I didn't think.”

“Yes, you did.”

“No, I reacted.”

“Sometimes character is what makes the decision before fear finishes the calculation.”

Emily was silent.

Walter looked at the nearly empty office.

“Do you know why most people didn't move?”

“Because they were scared of Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“And I wasn't?”

“You were terrified.”

Emily gave him a surprised look.

“How do you know?”

“Your hands were shaking.”

She looked down.

Walter continued.

“Courage isn't the absence of fear, Emily. It's deciding something else matters more.”

The next morning, Collins & Merritt Global Finance woke up to rumors.

By 8:00 a.m., employees on twelve floors had heard some version of the story.

A janitor had fired a director.

A janitor owned the company.

A janitor was the chairman's father.

A janitor was an undercover federal investigator.

A janitor had founded Collins & Merritt.

Most versions were wrong.
