Emily looked up.

Walter's hand emerged holding a small dark-gray flip phone.

Nothing more.

Old.

Scratched.

Almost absurd in a building where employees replaced their smartphones every year.

Walter flipped it open.

He raised it to his ear.

And waited.

Richard gave a faint, disbelieving laugh.

Walter ignored him.

Someone answered.

Walter spoke.

“I'm downstairs.”

Silence.

He looked toward the executive elevators.

“Tell the board not to start without me.”

Richard's face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

His lips parted.

His shoulders lowered slightly.

The confidence in his eyes disappeared.

Emily stared at Walter.

Security stopped moving.

Walter kept the phone against his ear.

“Yes.”

He listened.

“No. Don't send anyone down yet.”

Another pause.

“I'll handle it.”

He closed the phone.

For the first time since entering the bank, nobody looked at his coat.

They looked at his face.

Richard tried to recover.

“I don't know who you think you're calling, but—”

A soft chime interrupted him.

The restricted executive elevator lit up.

Descending.

Richard turned.

So did everyone else.

Walter slipped the phone back into his coat.

The elevator numbers began falling.

Thirty-two.

Thirty-one.

Thirty.

Richard watched them.

His breathing changed.

Emily noticed.

Walter noticed too.

When the elevator reached the lobby, the doors opened.

Nobody stepped out.

The cabin was empty.

Walter walked toward it.

Richard moved aside without being asked.

Walter stopped before entering.

Then he looked back at Emily.

“What is your name?”

She hesitated.

“Emily Carter.”

Walter nodded once.

“Thank you, Emily Carter.”

“For what?”

“For asking a question before making a judgment.”

Richard stared at the floor.

Walter stepped into the elevator.

The doors began to close.

Then he placed one hand between them.

They reopened.

Walter looked directly at Richard.

“You should stay downstairs.”

Richard's face went pale.

Walter released the door.

The elevator closed.

And for the first time in twenty-two years at the bank, Richard Bennett had no idea what was waiting for him next.

For eleven minutes, nothing happened.

Those eleven minutes felt longer than the entire evening.

Richard remained near the elevator, pretending to review messages on his phone.

Emily returned to her desk but could not concentrate.

The two security officers exchanged occasional glances.

Nobody discussed what had just happened.

That made it worse.

Finally, Richard walked toward Emily.

“What exactly did he say to you before I came over?”

“Nothing.”

“You spoke to him.”

“I said maybe we should check his name.”

“I know what you said.”

His voice sharpened.

“What did he say before that?”

“Nothing.”

Richard studied her.

Emily met his eyes.

For once, she did not look away.

Richard lowered his voice.

“You have no idea who that man is.”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

Emily said nothing.

Richard leaned closer.

“That means you don't speculate. You don't tell anyone what happened here. You don't repeat that ridiculous phone call.”

Emily frowned.

“Why?”

“Because appearances matter.”

She almost laughed.

The irony seemed too obvious.

Richard noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Say it.”

Emily shook her head.

Richard's expression hardened.

“You're still on probation, Emily.”

“I know.”

“And you nearly lost your job tonight.”

“Because I wanted to check someone's name?”

“Because you challenged a senior executive in front of clients.”

Emily stared at him.

“He wasn't bothering anyone.”

Richard sighed.

“You're young. You think kindness is a substitute for judgment.”

“No.”

“Then learn something tonight.”

Emily glanced toward the elevator.

“Maybe we both should.”

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Everything changed.

His posture straightened instantly.

“Yes?”

He listened.

Emily watched the color drain from his face.

“Of course.”

Pause.

“Yes, immediately.”

He ended the call.

One of the security officers approached.

“Everything okay?”

Richard didn't answer.

He looked toward Emily.

“Stay here.”

Then he walked quickly toward the executive elevator.

He pressed the call button.

Nothing happened.

He pressed it again.
