PART 2 — THE TRUTH NOBODY EXPECTED
Mason’s face went pale as panic flooded through his body. Five enormous bikers now surrounded him, and there was nowhere to run. The man holding his wrist was easily twice his size, with a gray beard and arms that looked capable of lifting an engine block. Every terrible story Mason had ever heard about biker gangs raced through his mind at once. The wallet slipped from his hand and landed on the floor. Several customers immediately pulled out their phones, expecting a confrontation.
“Please,” Mason stammered. “I’m sorry.”
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt worse than yelling.
Tears began forming in the teenager’s eyes as he realized he had finally ruined everything. He imagined police arriving, juvenile detention, and Lily being left completely alone. The biker slowly picked up the wallet and studied the frightened boy for several seconds. Then he asked a question nobody expected.
“Why’d you do it, kid?”
Mason lowered his head.
At first he said nothing.
Then the truth came pouring out.
“My little sister hasn’t eaten since yesterday.”
The restaurant remained silent.
Mason wiped his eyes with his sleeve and continued speaking.
“Our mom died two years ago. Dad disappeared. I tried finding work all day. Nobody would hire me. Lily said she wasn’t hungry, but I know she’s lying because she always does that when there’s not enough  food.”
The biker’s expression changed.
So did everyone else’s.
A waitress standing nearby quietly covered her mouth. An elderly customer stopped recording with his phone. Even the other bikers exchanged uncomfortable looks. The giant man finally released Mason’s wrist and glanced toward his friends.
“Kid,” he said softly, “look at me.”
Mason slowly raised his head.
The biker handed him back the  wallet.
Then he did something nobody in the diner expected.
He opened it.
Pulled out several hundred dollars in cash.
And shoved the money into Mason’s jacket pocket.
“What are you doing?” Mason whispered.
The biker smiled.
“Feeding your sister.”
The teenager stared in disbelief.
“I can’t take that.”
“Yeah, you can.”
The biker pointed a finger toward him.
“But you’re gonna earn the next stack.
