She looked directly at Naomi.

“Ms. Caldwell…”

Naomi waited.

Emily took a breath.

“The board isn’t asking whether this is a customer complaint anymore.””

Naomi looked at the screen.

“What are they asking?””

Emily swallowed.

“They want to know if you want to terminate Victoria Langford’s partnership with Skybridge.””

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“No.””

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Naomi looked at her.

And for the first time, Victoria realized something terrifying.

Naomi had never needed to prove she had power.

She had been holding it the entire time.

Naomi slowly closed her folder.

Inside was the Christmas card from the woman who taught her forgiveness.

But forgiveness did not mean ignoring harm.

It meant choosing what came next.

Naomi looked toward the cockpit door.

Then at Victoria.

“I need to know one thing before I make any decision.””

Victoria’s voice was barely audible.

“What?””

Naomi held her gaze.

“When you spoke to me like that…”

She paused.

“Did you truly not know who I was?””

The question surprised everyone.

Because suddenly, it wasn’t about the CEO.

It wasn’t about the billionaire.

It wasn’t about the owner of the plane.

It was about the woman sitting in seat 1A.

Victoria opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Naomi’s phone began ringing.

The screen showed a name she hadn’t seen in three days.

The hospital.

Naomi’s heart stopped.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A nurse’s trembling voice came through.

“Ms. Caldwell?””

Naomi stood.

“Yes. What happened?””

The nurse hesitated.

“I’m sorry to call during your flight, but your grandmother…”

Naomi gripped the phone tighter.

“What about my grandmother?””

The cabin went silent.

Everyone watched her face change.

Then the nurse whispered the words that made Naomi forget everything about Victoria Langford.

“Evelyn Caldwell woke up.””

A pause.

“But she asked for you.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

Because she knew there was something strange in the nurse’s voice.

Something unfinished.

Something wrong.

Then the nurse added:

“Before she lost consciousness again, she said there was something important you needed to know about your past.””

Naomi forgot the entire cabin existed.

The whispers.

The cameras.

Victoria Langford.

The millions of dollars of decisions waiting for her.

All of it disappeared the moment she heard the nurse’s voice.

“Is she awake now?”” Naomi asked.

Her hand tightened around the phone.

The answer took too long.

“No, Ms. Caldwell.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than the turbulence outside.

Naomi looked through the airplane window.

Snow continued falling over the runway.

The world looked peaceful.

But inside her chest, everything was moving too fast.

“What happened?”” she asked.

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Your grandmother briefly regained consciousness about twenty minutes ago.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

Twenty minutes.

While she was sitting on an airplane being forced to defend her right to exist in a seat she paid for, Evelyn had opened her eyes.

“Why didn’t someone call me immediately?””

“We tried,” the nurse explained.

“But your flight was already preparing for departure, and we couldn’t get through.””

Naomi swallowed.

“What did she say?””

The nurse paused.

“She kept asking for you.””

Naomi pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“That’s normal.””

“No,” the nurse replied softly.

“It was different this time.””

Naomi froze.

“What do you mean?””

The nurse took a breath.

“Your grandmother has been confused since the medication started. But tonight, she was completely clear.””

The cabin around Naomi remained silent.

Even Victoria had stopped moving.

“She knew exactly where she was,” the nurse continued.

“She knew it was Christmas Eve. She knew you were coming home.””

Naomi’s eyes burned.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“She said, ‘Naomi cannot know the truth from anyone else. It has to come from me.’”

A cold feeling moved through Naomi.

“The truth about what?””

The nurse hesitated.

“That’s the part I don’t know.””

Naomi looked down at the leather folder on her tray table.

The Christmas card.

The handwriting.

The memories.

Her entire life had been built around Evelyn Caldwell.

Her grandmother was the person who rescued her.

The person who raised her after Naomi’s parents died when she was young.

The person who told her she was loved when the world gave her every reason to believe otherwise.

There had never been secrets between them.

At least, Naomi thought there weren’t.

“Did she say anything else?””

The nurse was quiet.

Then:

“She mentioned a name.””

Naomi’s heart skipped.

“What name?””

“She said…”

The nurse stopped.

“Ms. Caldwell, I’m sorry. I don’t know if I should tell you this over the phone.””

Naomi stood straighter.

“Tell me.””

A long pause.

Then:

“She said the name ‘Marcus Vale.’”

The sound of that name hit Naomi like a door opening in a room she thought was locked forever.

She hadn’t heard it in twenty-two years.

Not since she was sixteen.

Not since the night she found an old newspaper clipping hidden inside Evelyn’s closet.

Not since she asked her grandmother:

Who is this man?

And Evelyn answered:

Someone from a life I left behind.

Naomi’s voice became quieter.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Exactly that name?””

“Yes.””

Naomi stared ahead.

Victoria was still standing nearby.

But Naomi barely saw her.

Because suddenly, the person she had spent her entire life trusting had just opened a door to a past Naomi knew nothing about.

“Ms. Caldwell?””

Naomi shook herself.

“Yes.””

“Your grandmother also asked us to give you something.””

“What?””

“A small envelope.””

Naomi’s breathing changed.

“Where is it?””

“She told us not to open it unless you were on your way home.””

Naomi looked down at the leather folder.

The Christmas card.

The envelope.

Everything Evelyn had sent her suddenly felt different.

“Can you describe it?””
