Emily looked down.
“I defended myself.”
Rachel’s shoulders sank.
“You promised me.”
Those four words hurt more than anything Brad had said.
Emily swallowed.
“I know.”
Ms.
Reyes stepped forward.
“Mrs.
Harris, I saw what happened.
Your daughter avoided a fight for as long as she possibly could.”
Rachel looked at her.
“You witnessed it?”
“Yes.
And there are videos.”
Dr.
Mercer invited them into his office and replayed the recordings.
Rachel watched Brad knock Emily’s tray aside.
She watched Emily try to leave.
She watched Kyle and Jake block her path.
Then she watched Brad seize her daughter’s wrist.
Emily saw her mother’s jaw tighten.
The video continued.
Emily rotated her trapped hand toward the weakest point of Brad’s grip, stepped diagonally, controlled his arm, and used his forward pressure to send him down.
She immediately backed away.
Brad rose and charged again.
Emily redirected him against the edge
of the table, held him there for less than a second, and released him.
Then she stepped back with both hands open.
“I’m done,” she had said.
Rachel stared at the screen.
When the recording ended, she looked at Emily.
“You didn’t hit him.”
“No.”
“Not once?”
“No.”
Ms.
Reyes shook her head.
“She showed remarkable control.”
Rachel sat beside her daughter.
The anger left her face.
“I owe you an apology.”
Emily frowned.
“Mom—”
“No.
I made you promise not to fight because I wanted to protect your fresh start.
But I should never have made you feel that defending yourself would disappoint me.”
Emily’s eyes filled, and she looked toward the window before the tears could fall.
“I tried to walk away.”
Rachel squeezed her hand.
“I saw.”
A knock sounded at the door.
Brad’s father entered without waiting to be invited.
Robert Thompson was broad like his son and carried the same assumption that rooms would rearrange themselves around him.
Brad followed behind him.
“I want to know why my son is being treated like a criminal,” Robert said.
Dr.
Mercer stood.
“Nobody has called Brad a criminal.
We are investigating a serious bullying incident and physical confrontation.”
Robert looked at Emily.
“That’s the girl?”
Rachel stood too.
“Her name is Emily.”
Robert ignored her.
“Brad says she threw him onto the floor.”
“After he grabbed her,” Dr.
Mercer said.
“He’s sixteen.
Kids mess around.”
Rachel’s voice went cold.
“Taking someone’s property, trapping her between three boys, knocking her lunch onto the floor, and grabbing her after she repeatedly asks to leave isn’t messing around.”
Robert turned toward Brad.
“Is that what happened?”
Brad crossed his arms.
“She’s exaggerating.”
Dr.
Mercer rotated his laptop.
“Then you should watch this.”
Brad’s expression changed instantly.
“Dad, it’s edited.”
“It isn’t,” Ms.
Reyes said.
Dr.
Mercer played Jake’s recording, followed by the freshman’s video from across the cafeteria.
The second angle was even clearer.
When the videos ended, Robert said nothing for several seconds.
Brad shifted beside him.
“She still threw me.”
His father looked at him.
