“That makes zero sense,” Maya said.

“None at all,” Priya agreed.

“I purchased a full-fare ticket.”

“We verified the receipt.”

“Who compiled this list?”

“Rebecca claims she doesn’t know.”

“How was it distributed to her?”

“Through an encrypted, off-the-clock crew chat group.”

Maya fell silent.

This wasn't an issue of an official corporate directive. It was an off-grid, unmonitored group where frontline staff were actively screening and flagging passengers outside of established fraud-prevention procedures.

“What criteria determines who ends up on this list?”

Priya looked uneasy. “We don't have that information yet.”

That prospect unsettled Maya far more than Rebecca’s individual conduct. A single employee could be disciplined, retrained, or terminated. An underground workplace culture operating beyond company policies, audit trails, and oversight could quietly infect an entire operation.

At 6:30 p.m., Maya finally returned home. Her husband, Daniel, was waiting in the kitchen with takeout boxes. He didn't work in the aviation sector—one of the qualities she had always valued most about their partnership.

“Have you eaten?” he asked gently.

“No.”

“Is your phone switched off?”

“No.”

“Then turn it facedown on the counter.”

She complied. For twelve uninterrupted minutes, they ate their dinner in quiet relief.

Then, her personal phone buzzed against the marble countertop.

A text message from an unregistered number.

Attached was a single screenshot of a private messaging thread.

The header read:

FIRST CLASS WATCHLIST — SAVE YOURSELF THE ARGUMENT.

Below the banner was an unvetted roster of passenger names, travel histories, photos scraped from personal social media accounts, and derogatory operational notes.

Some comments targeted a passenger's attire.

Some mocked speech patterns and accents.

Some singled out age.

Some hinted at racial profiling indirectly.

Others were completely overt.

Maya scrolled slowly down the screen until she found her own entry:

MAYA WILLIAMS — WATCH FOR FAKE STATUS. ALWAYS DRESSES LIKE SHE’S FLYING BASIC.
