For the first time, the sheriff went completely still.
“You recorded this?”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me?”
Dana looked around the public diner.
“You approached me.”
Reeves glanced toward the door.
Dana did not block him.
Did not touch him.
Did not order him to remain.
She simply retrieved her phone and made a call.
Not to the county sheriff’s office.
To the state field team waiting outside the county.
Reeves left the diner before investigators arrived.
Dana did not chase him.
That was not the point.
The evidence was already there.
Two hours later, investigators began collecting accounts.
The father in the next booth described what he saw.
His wife confirmed it.
The waitress described the sheriff demanding identification and pulling Dana from the booth.
The diner owner provided security footage.
Dana turned over her own recording.
Investigators photographed the marks on her wrist.
The coffee-stained table remained visible in part of the video.
A mundane detail.
But one that helped establish exactly when Reeves had physically pulled her to her feet.
Then they asked the simplest question.
What suspicious conduct had Dana engaged in before Reeves approached?
Nobody could identify any.
Not the waitress.
Not the owner.
Not the customers.
Dana had walked in.
Ordered breakfast.
Sat alone.
That was all.
Reeves gave a different explanation.
He said the department had received reports about suspicious outsiders in the area.
Investigators asked him to identify the reports.
He referred to recent property crimes.
They asked whether Dana matched a suspect description.
He could not produce one.
He suggested her rental car had attracted attention.
Investigators checked.
No active alert was associated with it.
He then emphasized that he had merely requested identification.
The footage showed more.
He had physically grabbed Dana when she complied.
He pulled her from the booth.
And when a witness challenged him, Reeves told the man to stay out of police business.
The issue became larger than whether a sheriff could speak with someone in a diner.
It was why the encounter escalated after Dana calmly asked what she had done.
Dana insisted the review not stop there.
Her own experience mattered.
But it was not why she had been sent.
The earlier complaints were reopened.
