"She attacked me!" Brenda continued, her voice rising in feigned hysteria, desperate to control the narrative before anyone else could speak. "She rammed her cart into me, she tried to steal my credit card, and she rigged your self-checkout machine! I don't know what kind of illegal smuggling ring she’s running, but she is the one you want! She’s dangerous! I want to press full federal charges!"

The supermarket was dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerators and the distant wail of sirens outside. The crowd of shoppers watched in disgust as Brenda doubled down on her vicious lies, but no one dared to interrupt the federal authorities.

On the wooden bench, Maya sat frozen, her arms still wrapped tightly around her swollen belly. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Even with the truth exposed to the crowd, watching Brenda flawlessly pivot into a weeping victim was terrifying. Maya opened her mouth to defend herself, her voice shaking. "No... I didn't—"

The lead agent raised a single, gloved hand, silencing the room.

He didn't argue with Brenda. He didn't ask for witness statements. He didn't even ask for her name.

Instead, he reached down to the tactical rig strapped across his chest and unclipped a heavy, ruggedized tablet. He tapped the thick glass screen twice.

"Ma'am," the agent said, his voice a deep, authoritative rumble that cut through Brenda’s shrill performance. "This entire operation is code-named Safe Harbor. We've been tracking a black-market logistics network for six months. We knew exactly which store the drop was happening in. We knew exactly what time the asset was scheduled to be picked up."

Brenda’s fake tears instantly vanished. Her jaw tightened. "I don't know what you're talking about," she snapped, taking a half-step backward. "I am just a grandmother trying to buy a limited-edition crib. I have rights. You cannot interrogate me without my lawyer present."

"You aren't being interrogated," the agent replied flatly. "You're being detained based on real-time visual evidence."

He turned the ruggedized tablet around so the large screen faced Brenda.

He pressed play.

The crisp, high-definition audio from the hidden camera embedded inside the crib’s packaging suddenly echoed through the quiet grocery store.

"Give me the crib!"

Brenda’s own voice, vicious and unhinged, blasted from the tablet's speakers.

The video feed was crystal clear. Because the camera was embedded in the top handle of the box, it provided a perfect, wide-angle view from inside Maya's shopping cart. The screen clearly showed Maya’s faded maternity shirt. It showed Brenda’s manicured hands violently gripping the metal handle of her own cart.

And then, the horrible, sickening THUD echoed from the tablet as the video showed Brenda ramming the heavy steel edge of the cart directly into the pregnant woman’s hip.

The crowd of shoppers winced, some gasping aloud as they heard the impact a second time. On the video, Maya stumbled backward out of frame, her terrified, agonizing sobs captured perfectly by the hidden microphone.

"You pathetic thief," Brenda’s voice sneered on the playback, her face filling the frame as she snatched the box out of the cart, looking directly into the hidden pinhole lens with absolute disgust. "Stop following me around trying to steal my grandson's present!"

The lead agent paused the video, freezing the screen on a high-definition, unflattering close-up of Brenda’s snarling face.

Brenda stared at the tablet, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. The arrogant, wealthy facade shattered completely, leaving nothing but raw, undeniable guilt. There was no spinning the footage. There was no claiming self-defense. She had violently assaulted a pregnant woman, and she had done it on a live, encrypted federal broadcast.

"That... that's manipulated," Brenda stammered weakly, her voice dropping to a pathetic whisper. "That's fake."

"Agent?" a deep voice called out.

Marcus, the burly man in the flannel shirt, stepped out of the crowd. He walked calmly toward the tactical team, keeping his hands entirely visible. He reached into his front breast pocket and pulled out the thick, black burner phone he had confiscated from Brenda earlier.

"She was carrying this in her Prada bag," Marcus said, holding the device out to the lead agent. "When the lockdown hit, she got an encrypted call. She tried to snap the phone in half to destroy the SIM card. I figured you folks might want it."

The lead agent took the burner phone, turning it over in his gloved hands. He looked up at Brenda, his eyes narrowing. "Attempted destruction of federal evidence. Assault. Interference with an active sting operation. And we haven't even pulled the GPS data off this device yet to see exactly which trafficking hub you were reporting to."

Brenda’s knees buckled.

She collapsed onto the cold linoleum, her heavy gold bracelets clattering violently against the floor. "No! Please! I don't know them! I was just paid to intercept the package! I didn't know it was a setup! Please, I have money, I can help you find them!"

"Save it for the federal prosecutor," the agent said. He gestured to two tactical officers standing behind him. "Cuff her."

The officers stepped forward, hauling Brenda to her feet without an ounce of gentleness. They forced her arms behind her back. The sharp, mechanical CLICK-CLICK of heavy steel handcuffs echoing through the supermarket was the most satisfying sound Maya had ever heard.

"Brenda Vance, you are under arrest for federal interference, destruction of evidence, and aggravated assault," one of the officers stated loudly, reciting her Miranda rights as he tightened the cuffs.

Brenda burst into messy, ugly tears. Her perfectly styled hair fell in her face as she sobbed, completely stripped of her power, her status, and her dignity. She didn't fight back as the two officers marched her past the registers, out the sliding glass doors, and directly toward the back of a waiting armored transport vehicle.

The moment the doors of the transport slammed shut, the heavy, suffocating tension inside the supermarket finally broke.
