They reset.

This time Tyler attacked harder.

Amara defended.

He tried to pressure her toward the edge.

She pivoted.

He followed.

She pivoted again.

Tyler suddenly realized he was chasing her.

That was exactly what she wanted.

He rushed.

Amara changed direction.

Tyler lost balance.

She controlled the movement and brought him safely to the mat.

No slam.

No injury.

Just technique.

The gym erupted.

Tyler immediately stood.

“Lucky.”

Amara said nothing.

“Again.”

Marcus stepped in.

“Tyler, stop.”

“No.”

“That's enough.”

“I said again.”

Tyler's voice echoed.

Amara looked at Marcus.

Marcus shook his head.

But then Daniel stepped forward.

“Let them finish the round.”

Marcus looked at him.

Daniel quietly added:

“He needs to learn.”

Marcus hesitated.

Then nodded.

They reset.

Tyler's breathing was heavier now.

Amara looked exactly the same.

Calm.

Focused.

Ready.

Tyler attacked.

This time, Amara didn't retreat.

She met him.

A quick exchange.

A shift.

A turn.

Tyler found himself off balance.

He tried to recover.

Amara transitioned smoothly.

Within seconds, Tyler was trapped in a controlled position.

He struggled.

Amara adjusted.

Tyler couldn't move.

“Tap,” Daniel said calmly.

Tyler refused.

He pushed harder.

Nothing.

His face reddened.

Amara didn't hurt him.

She simply held the position.

“Tap,” Marcus repeated.

Tyler finally slapped the mat.

Once.

The gym went silent.

Amara immediately released him.

Tyler rolled away and sat up.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody celebrated.

Amara stood and offered him her hand.

Tyler stared at it.

Then looked away.

Amara lowered her hand.

The moment should have ended there.

But Tyler had one question.

“How?”

Amara looked at him.

“You chased me.”

Tyler frowned.

“You made me chase you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You chose to.”

Tyler didn't answer.

For the first time, the audience wasn't watching him because they thought he was amazing.

They were watching because they had seen him lose.

And Tyler wasn't ready for what that meant.

CHAPTER 4 — WHAT AMARA WAS RUNNING FROM

The next morning, Amara arrived before sunrise.

She found the gym almost empty.

Only Marcus was there.

He was sitting behind the desk, drinking coffee.

“Morning.”

“Morning, Coach.”

Marcus watched her put down her backpack.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

Amara nodded.

Marcus didn't believe her.

After a moment, she asked:

“Did Tyler quit?”

Marcus smiled.

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because quitting won't teach him anything.”

Marcus studied her.

“You sound like someone much older.”

Amara smiled faintly.

“My grandmother says that.”

“Where is she?”

“She passed away.”

Marcus's expression softened.

“I'm sorry.”

Amara nodded.

“She taught me to fight.”

“Your grandmother?”

“Yes.”

“Was she a fighter?”

Amara sat down.

“She was a teacher.”

Marcus smiled.

“What did she teach?”

Amara looked at the empty mat.

“Not how to hurt people.”

She paused.

“How to stay calm when people want you to become angry.”
