“Right out here, General!

Right at the front desk!”

CHAPTER SIX: THE RECKONING AT OAK HAVEN

When Sarah stepped back into the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Miller stood rigid against the wall, his face completely flushed.

Brenda Lawson was wiping tears from her eyes with a paper tissue, terrified that she was going to be implicated in a federal offense.

Sarah walked straight to the counter.

She picked up her property bag, opened it, and retrieved her personal items.

She took her heavy, encrypted sat-com phone, powered it on, and entered her twenty-four-digit security clearance code.

Within three seconds, the screen flashed green: SECURE LINK ESTABLISHED.

She dialed the direct line to the Pentagon SCIF.The call connected on the first ring.“Reynolds,” she said into the receiver.

“General!”

Colonel Vance’s voice erupted through the speaker.

“Are you intact, ma’am?

Do you require medical attention or immediate security extraction?”

“I am physically uninjured, Colonel,” Sarah reported, her tone crisp and operational.

“I am standing in the lobby of the Oak Haven Sheriff’s Office.

I am in possession of my government property.”

“General Brooks is on the line, ma’am,” Vance said.

“Sarah,” General Brooks’ voice broke in.

“What is your tactical situation?

Do you want me to dispatch the Military Police from Fort Stewart?

They can have a convoy of armored Humvees on site in forty minutes.”

Sarah glanced over at Sheriff Ryker.

Ryker’s face went completely white at the mention of military vehicles arriving in his town.

“Negative, General Brooks,” Sarah replied calmly.

“That will not be necessary for my physical safety.

However, I am requesting an immediate federal civilian audit and a Department of Justice investigation into the law enforcement operations of Oak Haven County, Georgia.”

“Understood,” Brooks said without hesitation.

“The U.S.

Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia has already been notified.

Federal Marshals and Army CID agents are currently en route from Savannah.

They will arrive within twenty minutes to seize all digital video records, booking logs, and audio transmissions from that facility.”

“Thank you, General,” Sarah said.

“I will maintain my position on site until federal law enforcement arrives to secure the evidence chain.”

“Copy that, General.

We are delaying the Joint Chiefs VTC by forty-five minutes.

Take whatever time you need.”

“Reynolds out.”

Sarah ended the call.

She placed her encrypted phone in her pocket, retrieved her rental car keys from the counter, and turned to face Sheriff Ryker and Deputy Miller.

“General… please,” Ryker tried again, his hands trembling.

“Can we talk about this in my office?

Privately?”

“We have nothing to discuss privately, Sheriff,” Sarah said, her voice echoing in the small lobby.

“Every word spoken in this building, every action taken on Route 119, and every administrative entry made by your department is now part of an active federal investigation.”

She pointed to the overhead camera in the corner of the lobby.

“I noted the model of your security cameras,” Sarah said calmly.

“I noted the exact timestamp of my stop: 15:31.

I noted Deputy Miller’s body camera status light—turned off during an active stop, which constitutes a severe policy violation under Georgia POST guidelines.

I noted your demand for an illegal search without probable cause.

And I noted your explicit statement that I would be denied access to an attorney until Monday morning.”

Deputy Miller looked as if he were about to throw up.

He turned to Ryker.

“Sheriff… you told me she was swerving…”

“Shut up, Jared!”

Ryker barked, but there was no power left in his voice.

Twenty minutes later, the peaceful afternoon quiet of Oak Haven was shattered by the sound of approaching sirens.Three black SUVs bearing the seals of the United States Marshals Service, accompanied by two unmarked sedans containing Special Agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), pulled into the cracked parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office.Eight federal agents, dressed in dark tactical suits and carrying official federal search warrants, poured into the lobby. The lead agent—a senior US Marshal named Marcus Thorne—walked straight up to Sarah, presenting a crisp crisp salute.

“General Reynolds.
