Chapter 1: The Ghost on Hawthorne Street

“What is your name?” Marcus whispered. His voice was completely hollow, stripped of all its polished corporate authority.

The little girl didn’t step back. She kept her chin raised, holding her red bucket with a fierce grip that struck Marcus like a physical blow. It was the exact same way Elena used to hold her purse whenever a stranger approached them in the city—shoulders squared, protective, unafraid.

“Maya,” the girl answered.

Maya.

Marcus’s vision blurred. The edges of the suburban sidewalk, the manicured green lawns, the large oak trees providing shade—all of it seemed to dissolve into a buzzing gray static. He was thirty-five years old, the CEO of Sterling Investment Trust, a man who commanded boardrooms and managed billions in assets. Yet, kneeling on this cracked concrete, he felt entirely powerless, completely unmoored from reality.

Before Marcus could ask another question, a frantic voice echoed down the street.

“Maya! Oh my god, Maya, you can’t just run off like that!”

Marcus looked up. A teenage girl in a denim jacket and oversized t-shirt was sprinting down the sidewalk, her face pale with panic. She skidded to a halt in front of them, instantly stepping between Marcus and the little girl. She grabbed Maya’s hand, pulling her back.

“I am so sorry,” the teenager blurted out, looking nervously at Marcus’s sharp navy suit, his discarded briefcase, and the fact that he was kneeling on the ground. “I turned my back for two seconds to lock the front door. She’s too fast.”

Marcus slowly pushed himself up to his feet. His knees felt like water. His heart was hammering against his ribs in a chaotic, bruising rhythm. He looked at the teenager, trying to form words that wouldn't terrify her, but his throat was painfully tight.

“Are you... her babysitter?” Marcus managed to ask, his voice thick.

“Yeah,” the teen said, backing up another step, clearly intimidated by the intensity burning in Marcus’s dark eyes. “I just watch her in the afternoons. Come on, Maya, we need to go to the park.”

“Wait,” Marcus said. He took a half-step forward. The teenager flinched. Marcus immediately raised his hands, showing his empty palms, trying to project calm even as his entire universe was fracturing. “Please. I’m not going to hurt you. I just need to ask you a question.”

The teenager swallowed hard, her grip tightening on Maya’s hand. “Look, mister, I really need to go—”

“The little girl,” Marcus interrupted, pointing a shaking finger at Maya. “She just saw a photograph in my wallet. She said the woman in the picture was her mother.”

The teenager blinked, looking confused. “Yeah? Ms. Vance is her mom.”

Ms. Vance.

Elena’s maiden name was Vance.

Marcus felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. The heavy air of the August afternoon pressed down on him, suffocating him. He had buried Elena Vance five years ago. He had stood in the pouring rain in an expensive black suit, watching a mahogany casket being lowered into the wet earth of the Sterling family plot.

“Where is she?” Marcus asked. He didn’t realize he was pleading until he heard the crack in his own voice. “Where is Ms. Vance right now?”

The teenager looked wildly uncomfortable. “I can’t tell you that. I don’t even know you. You need to back away, or I’m calling the police.”

“My name is Marcus Sterling,” he said, his words spilling out in a desperate rush. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his money clip, stripping off three hundred-dollar bills. He held them out. “I swear to you on my life, I mean no harm. I just need to know where she works. Please.”

The teenager looked at the money, then up at Marcus’s face. She didn’t see a predator. She saw a man who looked like he was bleeding to death from an invisible wound.
