The Woman on the Gurney

Shortly past midnight, the emergency room doors crashed open, letting the howl of the storm chase the paramedics inside. Claire Bennett lay strapped to a gurney wearing a dark blue swimsuit, her pale skin marred by streaks of salt, sand, and blood. A long scrape crossed her shoulder, purple bruises shadowed her ribs, and one side of her face was already swelling. Yet the most frightening thing was not what the nurses could see. It was the way Claire kept fighting the oxygen mask, whispering the same broken sentence.

"He was there... he was under the water."

Ethan Cole burst through the doors behind her, soaked from head to toe. His black shirt clung to his chest, and his hands shook as two security officers blocked his path. "That’s my fiancée," he shouted. "Please, she needs to know I’m here."

Dr. Marcus Hale pressed a hand against Ethan’s chest and forced him back. "Let us save her first."

Claire turned toward the sound of Ethan’s voice. For one second, relief softened her eyes. Then terror replaced it. She recoiled so violently that the heart monitor screamed.

"Keep him away from me!" she cried.

The room went silent.

A nurse glanced at the police officer near the entrance. One paramedic slowly removed his gloves, remembering how Ethan had refused treatment until Claire was safely inside. Another whispered that he had found them near the rocks, Ethan coughing seawater while trying to keep Claire's face above the surf. None of it fit the terror in her eyes. Ethan took one step forward, then stopped himself, as though even his concern might frighten her more.

Ethan looked as if someone had struck him. "Claire, what are you talking about?"

Before she could answer, her body went limp. The nurses rushed her toward trauma imaging while Ethan stood frozen beneath the white hospital lights.

A police officer entered carrying a clear evidence bag. Inside was Claire’s cracked phone, still wet, its screen glowing through a web of shattered glass. Detective Lena Ortiz lifted the bag and read the only visible notification.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED UNDERWATER.

She looked from the phone to Ethan. His face had lost all color.

"Mr. Cole," she said calmly, "you’re coming with me."

Behind the closing doors, Claire’s monitor settled into a steady rhythm. But deep inside her damaged memory, a darker rhythm had begun: the slap of waves against a yacht, a man’s hand on her wrist, and a voice she could not yet place saying, "You know too much."
