“Mr. Bennett, I am terribly sorry.”

Samuel nodded.

“Thank you, ma'am.”

Adrian looked toward the reception desk.

“Olivia, would you please check the reservation under Samuel Bennett?”

Olivia immediately began typing.

Within seconds, her eyes widened.

“Yes, sir. Presidential suite. Three nights. All expenses covered.”

She paused.

“There's also a special note.”

“Read it.”

Olivia swallowed.

“VIP guest. Personal guest of the chairman. Highest priority. Please ensure exceptional service.”

A murmur spread through the lobby.

Vanessa gripped the edge of the reception counter.

Adrian looked at her.

“That's the reservation you said wasn't worth checking.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with panic.

“Mr. Bennett, if I had known—”

Adrian interrupted.

“If you had known what?”

She froze.

“If you had known he was my father? If you had known he was staying in the presidential suite? If you had known I owned the hotel?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Would you have treated him differently?”

“Of course.”

The answer escaped before she could stop herself.

Adrian's expression turned colder.

“That's exactly the problem.”

Margaret looked away.

Samuel gently touched his son's arm.

“Adrian, son, you don't need to embarrass her.”

Adrian turned.

“Dad, she embarrassed you in front of an entire lobby.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you defending her?”

Samuel sighed.

“Because humiliation doesn't become right just because we do it to somebody who hurt us.”

Adrian went quiet.

His father had spoken the same way when Adrian was a child.

He looked back at Vanessa.

“You're right, Dad.”

Then he addressed Margaret.

“I want a formal investigation. Preserve the lobby footage, the reservation records, and every relevant employee statement.”

Margaret nodded.

“Immediately.”

Vanessa tried to speak.

“Mr. Bennett, please. I've dedicated eight years to this hotel.”

Adrian regarded her.

“Then you should understand its standards better than anyone.”

He turned to Olivia.

“Has this happened before?”

The young receptionist froze.

Vanessa's eyes flashed a warning.

Adrian noticed.

“Olivia, nobody will punish you for telling the truth. Margaret will document that instruction.”

Olivia took a trembling breath.

“Yes, sir.”

Margaret stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

Olivia looked toward Samuel.

Then she spoke.

“Mr. Bennett isn't the first guest Ms. Whitmore has treated this way.”

Vanessa slammed her palm against the counter.

“That is a lie!”

But Olivia continued.

“And I have proof.”

CHAPTER 5: THE FILE NOBODY WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

Margaret led the group into a private conference room.

Samuel sat beside Adrian.

Vanessa remained standing, her face pale.

Olivia entered carrying a small folder.

“I've been keeping records for six months,” she explained.

Margaret frowned.

“Records of what?”

“Guest complaints that never reached corporate.”

Olivia opened the folder.

There were copies of emails, incident reports, and internal messages.

One complaint came from a retired schoolteacher who had been questioned repeatedly about whether she could afford her room.

Another involved a delivery driver who had been threatened with removal while waiting to meet a registered guest.

A third described a family whose reservation had been canceled after Vanessa decided their appearance did not fit the hotel's image.

Adrian read each report carefully.

Then he reached a document that made him stop.

It was an internal memo.

Subject: Lobby Presentation Standards

The memo instructed front-desk employees to identify individuals who might negatively affect the hotel's luxury atmosphere and discourage them from remaining in public areas.

Adrian looked up.

“Who wrote this?”

Olivia pointed toward the signature.

Vanessa Whitmore.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

“That document is being taken out of context.”

Adrian placed it on the table.
