THE CHAIN AT MILLBROOK GATE
Chapter I: The Padlock and the Red Suit
Storm clouds rolled heavily over the cornfields of Millbrook, casting an ominous gray shadow across the gravel farm road. Idling on the access track was a massive green John Deere combine harvester and a grain truck, their engines rumbling steadily as the harvest crew waited to reach the main silos before the rain began.
Blocking the entrance was a white luxury SUV parked diagonally across the road, right behind a steel farm gate wrapped tightly in heavy iron chains and secured with a brass padlock.
Standing triumphantly in front of the locked gate, dressed in a sharp scarlet-red business suit with a gold chain necklace and manicured nails, was Veronica Sterling. Waving her smartphone in the air to record, she screeched at the top of her lungs toward the machinery:
"This gate stays closed! Your farm doesn't belong here!"
Walking down the gravel path in mud-caked boots, blue denim overalls, and a worn brown canvas jacket was Frank, a seventy-two-year-old fourth-generation corn farmer. Behind him, his teenage grandson recorded the confrontation on a phone.
