This Huge Biker Was Putting a “For Sale” Sign on My Dead Son’s Motorcycle—And I Nearly Hit Him
My son had been dead for six days when I caught a stranger putting a FOR SALE sign beside his motorcycle.
I was sixty-eight years old.
I hadn't thrown a punch in decades.
But that morning, I came close.
My son Marcus was thirty-four when he died.
Sudden heart failure.
At least that's what I'd been told.
No warning.
No final conversation.
No chance for me to say the things fathers always assume they'll have time to say tomorrow.
Marcus lived alone in a small apartment across town.
His Harley was still parked outside.
That motorcycle was his pride.
He'd bought it used and spent six years rebuilding practically everything.
Engine.
Paint.
Exhaust.
Seat.
He used to joke that he'd spent enough money on it to qualify the bike as my second grandchild.
Six days after the funeral, Marcus's landlord called me.
"Mr. Carter, there's somebody messing with Marcus's motorcycle."
I was in my truck before he finished explaining.
When I arrived, I saw him.
Huge man.
Maybe sixty-five.
Gray beard.
Black leather vest.
Heavy boots.
He was beside Marcus's Harley holding a hammer.
Next to him was a sign.
FOR SALE.
Something inside me snapped.
I crossed the parking lot.
"What the hell are you doing?"
The biker turned.
I grabbed the hammer out of his hand.
He didn't resist.
"That motorcycle belonged to my son."
The man stared at me.
"And my son is dead."
His expression changed.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"You've got about ten seconds to explain why you're selling his motorcycle."
The biker remained completely calm.
Then he said:
"Because Marcus asked me to."
I almost laughed.
"My son would never sell this bike."
The biker reached slowly into his vest.
He removed a folded document.
"Actually, sir, he already did."
