Tomas refused the throne when nobles offered it. He said a boy who had lived behind bars would not build another cage, even a golden one. Instead, a council of towns, workers, soldiers, and dragon envoys formed a new government.
The baby dragon, Lyri, would not leave Tomas. Together they traveled between human villages and the northern peaks, repairing bridges burned during the war. Tomas learned to read treaties, not chains. He also returned to Blackstone every spring to make sure the old cells remained open and empty.
Years later, visitors asked why the great peace began.
Some spoke of armies, ancient magic, and a fallen king.
Avaron always told the simpler truth.
