Ethan folded the deed.

"I think it is."

Vanessa turned sharply and stormed away.

She had lost.

But she wasn't finished.

Because people like Vanessa rarely accepted embarrassment quietly.

They looked for someone else to blame.

And this time, she had already chosen her target.

Chapter 3 — The Wrong Car

That evening, Vanessa sat inside her immaculate kitchen staring at her phone.

Her HOA group chat was exploding.

Someone had posted a photograph of the tow truck leaving Ethan's driveway.

Another neighbor had written:

"Maybe HOA presidents should know which property they actually control."

Vanessa deleted the message.

Then another appeared.

"Does the HOA even have authority to tow cars from private driveways?"

Deleted.

Then another.

"Ethan literally showed the deed 😂."

Vanessa threw her phone onto the counter.

"Idiots."

She paced around the kitchen.

She wasn't embarrassed.

She was angry.

There was a difference.

The following afternoon, Vanessa drove to the HOA office.

She had decided to regain control.

If Ethan wanted to challenge her publicly, she would make him regret it.

She spent nearly an hour reviewing old complaints.

Parking violations.

Lawn violations.

Trash violations.

Fence violations.

Then she found something.

A white SUV registered to Ethan's neighbor had received several complaints for parking near the commercial center outside Maple Ridge.

Vanessa smiled.

"Got you."

She called a tow company.

But this time, something went wrong.

The tow company told her they could not remove the vehicle without proper authorization.

Vanessa became furious.

"Do you know who I am?"

The dispatcher sighed.

"Yes, ma'am."

"I'm the HOA president."

"And that lot isn't HOA property."

Vanessa slammed the phone down.

She drove to the commercial parking lot herself.

There was the white SUV.

She marched toward it.

"This is ridiculous!"

A tow truck arrived several minutes later.

Ray Miller stepped out.

Vanessa's face immediately changed.

"You."

Ray recognized her.

"Oh."

He glanced at the SUV.

"What's the problem?"

"It's illegally parked."

Ray looked at the vehicle.

"Do you own this parking lot?"

"No."

"Are you authorized by the property owner?"

"I'm the HOA president."

Ray sighed.

"We've had this conversation."

Vanessa pointed toward the SUV.

"Just tow it!"

Ray looked at the parking signs.

Then he looked behind Vanessa.

His expression changed.

"Actually..."

He pointed.

Vanessa turned.

A white SUV was parked directly behind her.

Her SUV.

Its front wheels were positioned squarely inside a clearly marked handicap parking space.

Vanessa's face went blank.

Ray looked at her.

"That's your car, isn't it?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"Yes."

He pointed toward the sign.

"You're illegally parked."

The young man standing nearby pulled out his phone.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"Wait."

Ray smiled.

"So..."

He gestured toward her vehicle.

"Should I tow that one?"

Vanessa's mouth fell open.
