CHAPTER 1

Maya was not a woman of many words.

In the dimly lit, heavy-bag-scented corners of Mick’s Boxing Gym, she was known only by the rhythmic, thudding echoes of her strikes.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The heavy bag swung violently from its chain.

Maya stepped back, breathed once, and drove another punch into it.

She was a tall, quiet Black woman with broad shoulders, tightly braided hair, and eyes that held the weight of a thousand untold struggles. While others bragged about their sparring sessions or posted their workouts on social media, Maya just worked.

Her hands were wrapped in frayed bandages.

Her old sneakers were beginning to split at the sides.

Her gray training shirt had been washed so many times that the fabric had become almost paper-thin.

She didn't care.

She didn't fight for glory.

She fought to quiet the noise in her own mind.

Mick, the owner of the gym, watched her from across the room.

"You've been here since five," he said.

Maya didn't stop punching.

"You need rest."

One final punch.

The bag swung away.

Maya caught it with both hands.

"I'm fine."

Mick smiled sadly.

"That's what people say when they're not."

Maya looked at him.

For a moment, something vulnerable appeared in her eyes.

Then it disappeared.

"I have a fight."

"Against Stella Vance."

Maya nodded.

Mick sighed.

Everyone knew Stella.

Stella "The Viper" Vance wasn't just a fighter.

She was an event.

She had sponsors, photographers, interviews, millions of views online, and an undefeated reputation that she protected as fiercely as she protected her title.

Maya had none of those things.

She didn't even have an official amateur record.

The upcoming fight was supposed to be an exhibition match.

At least, that's what the organizers called it.

But everyone knew what it really was.

A spectacle.

The champion against the unknown woman.

Mick walked toward Maya.

"Why did you accept this?"

Maya looked down at her wrapped hands.

"Because someone has to."

"That's not an answer."

"It is for me."

Mick studied her face.

He knew there was a story behind those words.

He also knew Maya wasn't ready to tell it.

Not yet.

So he simply nodded.

"Then tomorrow, don't fight Stella."

Maya looked confused.

"What?"

"Fight the woman underneath all that noise."

Maya said nothing.

Mick pointed toward the heavy bag.

"People like Stella spend their entire lives convincing everyone they're powerful."

He paused.

"Real power doesn't need to announce itself."

Maya glanced at the bag.

Then at her hands.

"I know."

Outside, rain began tapping against the gym windows.

Somewhere across the city, Stella Vance was preparing for the biggest show of her career.

She had no idea that the woman everyone thought was an easy opponent had already survived something far more difficult than a fight.

CHAPTER 2

Across town, in a state-of-the-art training facility bathed in neon lights, trained Stella "The Viper" Vance.

Every wall displayed photographs of Stella's victories.

Championship belts sat inside glass cases.

Large screens played highlights of her knockouts.

And in the center of it all stood Stella herself.

Blonde hair tied into a perfect ponytail.

Designer training clothes.

Expensive gloves.

A professional camera recording everything.

"Again!" her trainer shouted.

Stella attacked the pads.

Left.

Right.

Hook.

Kick.

She finished with a spinning strike that made the trainer stumble backward.

The cameraman applauded.

Stella grinned.
