I couldn't breathe. I couldn't even blink.
But Hank didn't flinch.
And neither did the Iron Hounds.
In a display of terrifying discipline, not a single biker shouted or rushed forward. Instead, without a word spoken between them, Big John, Dutch, and three other massive men simultaneously stepped off to the side and physically moved in front of me, linking their arms. In a split second, they formed a solid, unmovable wall of leather and muscle between Richard's gun and my body.
"You shoot her," Big John rumbled, his voice dark and promising, "you're gonna have to shoot through me. And I promise you, old man, you don't have enough bullets to stop what happens next."
Hank stood in the open, completely exposed, completely unafraid. He took a slow, agonizingly calm step toward Richard.
"You're making a mistake, Richard," Hank said, his voice lowering to a deadly whisper. "You're acting on fear. I get it. You're trying to protect your little girl. But you've already lost. And if you pull that trigger, this doesn't end in a courtroom. It ends on this floor."
"Stay back!" Richard screamed, his finger twitching on the trigger, the gun wavering between the human wall protecting me and Hank. "We are leaving! Victoria, get the bag!"
Victoria was sobbing hysterically, struggling to keep a grip on the heavy diamond-encrusted handbag as her father dragged her backward toward the kitchen doors.
But as they backed up, the heavy oak doors leading to the kitchen violently swung open from the other side.
They weren't met by fleeing kitchen staff.
They were met by five uniformed police officers, stepping through the doorway with their own service weapons drawn and leveled directly at Richard Sterling. Behind them stood Detective Miller, a seasoned state investigator who had always been a thorn in the side of the corrupt local precinct.
"Drop the weapon, Richard," Detective Miller ordered, his voice booming over the chaos. "Drop it right now, or you will be fired upon!"
Richard froze. He looked over his shoulder at the police, then back to the room full of bikers, and finally to his terrified daughter. The reality of his situation crushed him in an instant. There was no escaping this. His empire was over.
Slowly, his trembling hand lowered. The silver revolver slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor.
Immediately, two officers surged forward, slamming Richard against the wall and forcing his hands behind his back. The sound of ratcheting metal handcuffs echoed loudly.
Victoria shrieked as an officer grabbed her arm. She fought wildly, kicking and thrashing in her designer gown. "Get off me! I didn't do anything! It was an accident! Daddy, do something!"
In her struggle, her grip on the diamond bag finally failed.
The heavy, custom clutch dropped to the floor. The clasp snapped open upon impact, spilling its contents across the polished marble.
