“For?”
Ava’s breathing became uneven.
I saw the notebook in Madison’s hand. I saw the torn page near my shoe. I saw Tessa standing behind Madison, watching Ava disappear in front of us.
Then I saw something else.
Inside the open notebook, beneath the torn pages, was a small blue envelope. Ava had folded it into the back cover and written one word across the front:
Evidence.
Madison had not seen it yet.
I picked up the torn page and slid it into my pocket.
Ava noticed.
Her eyes met mine for the first time.
There was fear in them, but there was something else too. A question. Maybe she wanted to know whether I would protect the page, or hand it back to the room that had already failed her.
Madison took one step toward her.
“Are you going to apologize properly,” she asked, “or do I need to make you?”
That was when the fear in me finally became smaller than the shame.
I set the worksheets on the teacher’s desk. Then I walked toward Madison.
Tessa moved into my path.
“Jordan, don’t,” she said.
I stopped in front of her.
“Move.”
She glanced at Madison, waiting for permission.
Madison tilted her head. “You really want to do this?”
Behind them, Ava whispered my name.
I looked at her. I looked at the torn notebook. I looked at the students who had chosen the safety of silence.
Then I stepped between Ava and the two girls who had decided she was easy to break.
“I’m done watching,” I said.
Madison shoved me with both hands.
She was smaller than me and it still moved me back half a step into a desk corner that caught me under the ribs. The worksheets slid off the teacher’s desk behind me and fanned across the tile.
“Say it again,” she said.
“I’m done watching.”
She shoved me a second time, harder, both palms flat against my chest.
I did not hit her. I want that written down somewhere, because of what got said afterward. I did not raise a hand and I did not touch her at all.
I also did not move.
