My soldiers were there because they refused to let their commanding officer walk into the wreckage of her marriage alone.
Neighbors stepped onto porches.
Guests came out of the house.
Marcus appeared in the doorway holding a glass of champagne.
His smile disappeared when he saw the uniforms.
Olivia came up behind him.
Robert and Helen followed.
I stepped out of the staff car.
Pain pulled across my abdomen, but I stood straight.
Sarah emerged beside me.
David and four senior officers formed behind us.
Detective Luis Alvarez approached from the opposite side of the street carrying a thick case file.
Marcus descended one porch step.
“What is this?”
David’s heels struck the pavement.
He raised his hand.
“Good afternoon, Colonel Brooks.”
Every soldier behind him saluted.
The movement was simultaneous.
Precise.
The sound of sleeves shifting in the cold air seemed louder than the idling engines.
I returned the salute.
No one spoke.
Marcus stared at the silver eagles on my shoulders.
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Helen’s hand flew to her pendant.
Robert looked from the officers to me.
“Colonel?”
Olivia stepped backward.
Marcus descended another step.
“Amelia, what the hell is going on?”
“Colonel Brooks,” Sarah corrected.
His face reddened.
“You’re in the Army?”
“For eighteen years.”
“You said you worked for the government.”
“I do.”
“You lied to me.”
I almost pitied him.
A man surrounded by evidence of his own betrayals, still searching for a way to call himself the victim.
“I told you my work was confidential,” I said. “You decided confidential meant insignificant.”
Detective Alvarez walked toward the porch.
“Marcus Vale?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.”
Alvarez handed him a document.
“This is a warrant authorizing the search of this residence and your electronic devices in connection with identity theft, financial fraud, forgery, elder exploitation, and conspiracy.”
Robert gripped the porch railing.
“What?”
Police officers moved toward the door.
Olivia tried to slip behind Marcus.
An officer blocked her path.
“Ms. Grant, remain where you are.”
“This is insane,” Marcus snapped. “My wife is unstable. She just gave birth.”
Alvarez looked toward me.
“Your wife provided no allegations regarding the financial case.”
He opened the file.
“The bank did.”
Daniel stepped out of another vehicle.
He carried a leather portfolio containing the property documents.
Marcus’s confidence cracked.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Daniel faced Robert and Helen.
“Mr. and Mrs. Vale, the foreclosure on this residence was not stopped by Olivia Grant.”
Robert turned toward Olivia.
She had gone completely still.
Daniel removed the deed, payment records, trust documents, and transfer confirmations.
“The debt was purchased and paid through Brooks Holdings.”
Marcus stared at the name.
Then he looked at me.
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“The company is owned solely by Colonel Amelia Brooks. She paid the outstanding mortgage, taxes, penalties, and legal costs. She then placed the residence into a trust guaranteeing that both of you may live here for the rest of your lives.”
Robert’s knees buckled.
David stepped forward and caught his arm.
Helen did not move.
She only looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
Olivia found her voice first.
“She told me she wanted to remain anonymous.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You did not know Colonel Brooks was involved until after the transaction.”
“I have emails.”
“We have your emails too.”
Alvarez removed a photograph from the case file.
It showed Olivia sitting beside Marcus at a laptop.
On the screen was Robert’s bank account.
Another image showed Marcus holding Helen’s identification beside a forged authorization form.
Olivia’s face changed.
She looked at Marcus.
“You said those were legitimate.”
