The cold stone floor bit into my knees as I stared down the black barrel of Victor’s gun. The absolute terror paralyzed my lungs. I was going to die here, in the basement of a man I had never met, murdered to cover up a crime I had nothing to do with.
I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the deafening crack of the gunshot.
But it never came.
Instead, a voice cut through the silence of the vault. It was a voice filled with such absolute, crushing authority that it seemed to drop the temperature in the room by ten degrees.
"You always were an arrogant, sloppy thief, Gerald."
I opened my eyes.
The homeless man hadn't cowered. He hadn't raised his hands in surrender.
He stepped slowly in front of me, placing his body between Victor’s gun and my face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, damp, white cloth from the tasting table. Slowly, methodically, he wiped the thick smears of soot and charcoal off his jaw and cheekbones.
He dropped the dirty cloth onto the floor.
Gerald Thorne stared at the man’s face. The master estate manager froze entirely. All the color instantly drained from his face, leaving his skin an ashen, sickly gray. His hands began to shake violently, and the unlit Cuban cigar he had been holding tumbled from his fingers, hitting the stone floor with a quiet tap.
"Mr... Mr. Whitmore?" Gerald stammered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched wheeze.
I stared at the back of the man’s tattered coat, my brain stalling.
Adrian Whitmore. The billionaire. The ruthless Wall Street predator who owned the estate. He was the man I had fed at the gate this morning.
Victor lowered the gun slightly, looking desperately between Gerald and Adrian. "Boss? What’s going on? Who is this?"
"Put the gun down, Victor," Adrian commanded, his voice perfectly level, completely devoid of fear. "Unless you want to add murder of a federal witness to the grand larceny charges you’re about to face."
Adrian reached inside the folds of his filthy wool coat and pulled out the glowing, black satellite phone I had seen at the bus shelter.
"My CFO, Malcolm Reed, didn't lose contact with me," Adrian explained calmly, stepping aggressively toward the two terrified men. "He simply stopped taking your calls. Four months ago, my internal auditors flagged massive irregularities in the offshore accounts you control for this estate. But I needed absolute proof of your fencing operations before I brought the authorities in."
Adrian pressed a button on the side of the phone. The device emitted a loud, continuous beep.
"For the last forty-eight hours, I have been sleeping on the streets of my own city," Adrian continued, his eyes locked onto Gerald in a display of pure dominance. "I wanted to see exactly how my staff operates when they believe I am not watching. I wanted to see who was loyal, and who was eager to feed on the carcass. This phone has been live-transmitting every word spoken on this estate directly to the FBI field office in New Haven for the last six hours."
Victor panicked. His eyes went wide, and he aggressively raised the pistol, pointing it squarely at Adrian’s head.
"Shut it off!" Victor screamed. "I’ll kill you! I’ll shoot you right now!"
Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't take a single step backward. He looked at the trembling security guard with sheer contempt.
"You aren't going to shoot anyone, Victor," Adrian said coldly. "Because twenty heavily armed federal agents have been sitting quietly in the woods waiting for the Montreal transport van to arrive. And since I triggered my panic button five minutes ago, they are currently entering the service bay."
As if on cue, the heavy steel door of the service elevator at the end of the hall exploded open with a massive, echoing crash.
"FBI! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
The hallway was instantly flooded with tactical flashlights and the deafening shouts of heavily armed agents in dark body armor.
Victor screamed, dropping the pistol immediately and throwing himself flat onto the floor, locking his hands behind his head in sheer panic. Gerald simply stood there, his jaw hanging open in shock, completely broken, as two federal agents tackled him against the wall and violently snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
