THE CANDLE AT SWEET DELIGHTS

Chapter I: The Solitary Candle and the Empty Wallet

The sweet aroma of freshly baked croissants, cinnamon rolls, and vanilla bean frosting filled the warm interior of Sweet Delights Bakery. Outside the large front display windows, an overcast afternoon drizzle dampened the sidewalk, where a few patrons waited near the glass pastry cases.

Standing at the wooden order counter was an elderly man who looked like he had walked through a lifetime of hardship.

His face was gaunt, creased with deep lines of exhaustion, and his silver hair was unkempt. He wore a heavily worn, fraying olive-drab jacket over a faded collared shirt and scuffed leather boots. Resting on the wooden counter before him was a small, round white birthday cake topped with delicate frosting flowers and a single lit pink-and-white candle reading Happy Birthday.

The old man opened a cracked leather wallet with shaking, calloused hands, pulling out a single wrinkled one-dollar bill.

"I... I can't afford it," he murmured softly, his voice cracking with quiet embarrassment.

Standing behind the register was Lily, an eighteen-year-old bakery assistant with auburn hair tied back in a neat ponytail, wearing a light-green polo and a dark maroon apron.

Lily smiled warmly, reached into her apron pocket, and laid a crisp twenty-dollar bill on the counter beside the register.

"I'll cover it," Lily said gently.

The old man looked up, his eyes wide with surprise: "You don't have to."
