“You’re actually stepping onto this mat with me?” Staff Sergeant Jake Turner asked, loud enough for half the combat gym to hear.

Sergeant Emma Carter crossed the white boundary line without answering, and the laughter around Fort Liberty sharpened like something metallic.

Jake looked at her taped hands.

Then he looked at her bare feet.

His smile widened.

“You’re serious.”

Emma stopped three yards away.

“I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.”

A heavy bag behind them slowed until its chain stopped rattling.

Several soldiers near the benches turned completely around.

Someone gave a short laugh.

Another soldier whispered something that made three men grin.

Jake heard them.

That seemed to please him.

“Carter, you still have time to walk away.”

Emma tightened the athletic tape around her right wrist.

“Why would I do that?”

Jake’s smile weakened for half a second.

He stepped closer.

He outweighed her by at least forty pounds.

He was taller by several inches.

More importantly, almost everyone surrounding the mat already believed they knew the ending.

“This isn’t the base fitness center.”

“I know.”

“This isn’t an office challenge.”

“I know.”

“I’m not going easy because you made a stupid choice.”

Emma nodded once.

“Good.”

The answer landed differently than Jake expected.

A few soldiers stopped smiling.

Jake stared at her.

He had expected hesitation.

He had expected an excuse.

He had expected her to laugh nervously and soften the moment.

Emma did none of those things.

She simply waited.

Several yards away, Sergeant First Class Nolan Briggs stood beside the edge of the mat.

A black whistle rested against his chest.

His arms were folded.

His expression had become noticeably harder.

Jake glanced toward him.

“You hearing this, Briggs?”

Briggs did not smile.

“I’m hearing everything.”

Jake pointed toward Emma.

“Maybe explain the difference between confidence and stupidity.”

Briggs kept his eyes on Emma.

“You sure you want this, Carter?”

Emma gave him a small nod.

“I’m sure.”

Briggs remained silent.

The pause lasted only a second.

Jake noticed it anyway.

“What was that?”

Briggs looked at him.

“What was what?”

“That pause.”

“Nothing.”

Jake laughed again.

“There’s always something with you.”

Briggs lowered his arms.

“Follow the rules.”

Jake spread his hands.

“You worried about me?”

“I’m worried about both of you.”

A soldier near the wall murmured, “That’s generous.”

Several people laughed.

Emma heard them.

Her expression did not change.

Jake noticed that too.

“You don’t embarrass easily, do you?”

“Should I?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“How long you stay upright.”

That earned a louder reaction.

Someone slapped the wooden bench.

Jake turned slightly toward the crowd.

“She won’t last thirty seconds.”

A voice behind him answered.

“Twenty.”

The gym erupted.

Jake pointed toward whoever had spoken.

“I like twenty.”

Emma did not look at the spectators.

Her attention stayed on Jake.

The laughter finally began fading.

“You finished?” she asked.

Jake’s smile narrowed.

“With what?”

“Performing.”

The atmosphere shifted.

The laughter did not vanish.

It became uncertain.

Jake’s jaw tightened.

“You always talk this much?”

“Only when someone else won’t stop.”

A private near the equipment cage covered a grin.

Jake saw him.

“Go back to the office, Carter.”

Emma’s eyes hardened slightly.

“Before what?”

“Before you embarrass yourself.”

Someone quietly said, “Damn.”

Jake heard it.

Emma stepped farther onto the mat.

It was not dramatic.

She did not bounce.

She did not roll her neck.

She did not slap her gloves together.

She simply closed the distance by one measured step.

Every soldier nearby seemed to straighten.

Briggs watched her closely.

Emma noticed.

She gave no sign that she cared.

Jake noticed Briggs watching too.

“What’s your problem?” Jake asked him.

“Do your job.”

“I am.”

“No.”

Briggs nodded toward the mat.

“You’re talking.”

This time, the laughter aimed at Jake.

It was brief.

It was enough.

Jake looked toward the benches.

The room went quiet again.

He rolled his shoulders.

“Fine.”

Emma raised both hands.

Jake studied her posture.

Her feet stayed light without unnecessary movement.

Her shoulders remained loose.

Her chin stayed protected.

Nothing about her position looked theatrical.

Jake’s brow tightened.

“You’ve boxed before?”
