That word.

Nothing.

Jake looked at Emma.

She had noticed too.

She did not ask.

That bothered him even more.

A soldier near the fan whispered, “This just got weird.”

Another answered, “It was weird when she crossed the line.”

Jake flexed his fingers.

“You ready?”

Emma answered quietly.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Finally.”

Briggs raised the whistle.

Before he blew it, Emma spoke.

“Jake.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“You asked about confidence and stupidity.”

Several heads turned.

Jake’s eyes narrowed.

“I remember.”

Emma nodded toward Briggs.

“He gave you the answer.”

Jake looked at Briggs.

Briggs looked irritated.

“I didn’t answer anything.”

Emma kept watching Jake.

“You told us to follow the rules.”

Jake scoffed.

“That’s your big point?”

“No.”

“What is?”

“You were more interested in the audience.”

No one laughed.

Jake glanced toward the spectators again.

This time, the silence felt heavier.

Emma continued.

“I was interested in the rules.”

Briggs’s jaw shifted.

Jake looked back at her.

“You think that makes you smarter?”

“No.”

“Better?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Ready.”

Briggs blew the whistle.

Jake moved first.

He stepped forward quickly, testing distance with his lead hand.

Emma moved just outside his reach.

No panic.

No wasted motion.

Jake reset.

A few spectators murmured.

He advanced again.

Emma shifted left.

Jake turned.

She remained balanced.

Nothing spectacular happened.

That somehow made Jake more irritated.

He expected her to retreat too far.

She did not.

He expected her feet to cross.

They never did.

He expected her shoulders to tense.

They stayed relaxed.

Jake smiled again.

“You going to run all afternoon?”

Emma did not answer.

He stepped in.

She moved.

He followed.

She stopped sooner than he expected.

Jake had to adjust.

A small sound came from the benches.

Not laughter.

Recognition.

Jake heard it.

He pressed forward again.

Emma’s hands remained disciplined.

She gave him nothing obvious.

Briggs tracked their feet.

His expression grew tighter.

Jake tried to draw a reaction with a quick feint.

Emma barely blinked.

He reset.

“You’ve done more than fitness classes.”

Emma said nothing.

Jake moved again.

This time, she stepped to an angle before he finished turning.

Briggs’s eyes followed her.

Jake stopped.

“Where did you learn that?”

Emma remained inside the boundary.

“I told you.”

“You told me nothing.”

“I said I trained.”

“That can mean anything.”

Emma lifted her hands.

“Then stop asking.”

A soldier near the wall quietly laughed.

Jake looked at him.

Emma did not.

That difference was becoming obvious.

Jake wanted the room.

Emma wanted the moment in front of her.

Briggs saw the distinction.

So did several others.

Jake approached more carefully.

His earlier swagger began disappearing.

He still had size.

He still had reach.

He still had experience.

But now he was studying her instead of entertaining everyone else.

That was the first real change.

Emma noticed.

“Better,” she said.

Jake’s eyes flashed.

“What?”

“You’re paying attention now.”

A few soldiers shifted uncomfortably.

Jake took a breath.

“You really enjoy this.”

“No.”

“Could’ve fooled me.”

“I enjoy learning.”

“You think you’re teaching me something?”

Emma did not answer.

Jake moved.

The exchange remained controlled.

Neither soldier threw anything reckless.

Briggs stayed ready to intervene.

Emma kept forcing Jake to reset his position.

Every time he tried to crowd her, she found space.

Every time he expected hesitation, he found patience.

The gym slowly became quieter.

Even the heavy bags beyond the circle seemed farther away.

Jake stepped back.

His breathing was heavier now.

Emma’s remained steady.

He glanced toward the digital wall clock.

Only a short time had passed.

Someone behind him whispered, “That’s already more than twenty.”

Nobody laughed.

Jake heard that too.

His mouth tightened.

Emma lowered her hands slightly.

“You okay?”
