If someone had noticed, she was in danger.

John did the thing he had sworn never to do.

He called Dennis Felt.

“I know about Graves,” John said.

“I know about the shell companies.”

“I know about the guns.”

“And I know you are in the middle of it.”

He ordered Felt to meet him at the old foundry on River Road.

Seven in the morning.

Alone.

Ava watched John put on his leather cut and take the folded number from his pocket.

He placed it on the table.

“If Carla does not call by noon, you call this number.”

“Who is it?”

“FBI field office in Carver City.”

“Agent Marsh.”

“Tell him everything.”

John rode to the foundry alone because Felt would run if a crew appeared.

The old foundry sat abandoned at the edge of Millhaven’s industrial district, all rusted steel, dead weeds, and broken windows.

Felt arrived in a dark blue sedan looking thinner than John remembered.

At first he claimed he did not know about the guns.

John did not believe him.

Felt admitted the property deals.

He admitted Graves had built political pressure against the Riders.

He admitted the raid had been planned for the previous week.

An anonymous tip was supposed to lead police to the planted weapon behind the clubhouse.

But the weapon disappeared before the tip went in.

Ava had changed the timeline.

Graves panicked.

He ordered Carl Redding to plant the second gun within 72 hours and execute the raid by the end of the week.

John’s phone buzzed.

Duke.

“Silver sedan across from the clubhouse,” Duke said.

“Registered to Ridgeline Security Solutions.”

Then came the next update.

The black SUV had arrived too.

Two vehicles.

One on each end of the block.

Containment.

Carl Redding had watched John leave.

John raced back to Henderson Avenue with Felt following behind.

When he arrived, the street was empty.

Inside the clubhouse, the fight was already over.

Duke had blood on his knuckles and a cut above his eye.

Roach sat on the floor holding his arm at a wrong angle.

Two younger members were breathing hard near the bar.

Coyote sat in a chair with his hands zip-tied behind his back.

Three private security men had entered through the back door with a key.

They went straight for Wendy’s laptop and the printed documents.

They did not search.

They did not hesitate.

They knew exactly where to go.

The back door had four keys.

John had one.

Duke had one.

One was in the safe.

Coyote had one.

“My daughter,” Coyote said.

His voice broke the room.

Graves’s people had found his 22-year-old daughter in Carver City.

They had paid off her $47,000 debt.

Then they threatened to bury her if Coyote did not feed them information.

He had been compromised for four months.

He had edited what he told them, trying to protect the club while protecting his child.

But he had given them enough.

Too much.

He had given them the door.

John looked at the empty table where the evidence had been.

Then Wendy came downstairs holding a flash drive.

“What kind of forensic accountant do you think I am?” she said.

Everything had been backed up.

Ava came behind her holding Wendy’s phone.

When the men broke in, Wendy had started recording audio.

Four minutes and 37 seconds.

On the recording, the intruders took instructions from a voice on speaker.

The voice was Russell Graves.

John looked at Ava.

“Call Agent Marsh.”

Ava dialed the FBI from Wendy’s phone.

“My name is Ava Mercer,” she said.

“I have information about a criminal conspiracy involving a political candidate named Russell Graves, a private security firm, planted police weapons, and the attempted destruction of the Iron Ridge Riders Motorcycle Club.”

Her voice did not shake.

Agent Marsh asked if anyone was in immediate danger.

Ava looked at Duke’s blood, Roach’s arm, Coyote’s betrayal, Felt’s guilt, and John standing in the wreckage of a room that should have been safe.
