“Yes,” she said.

“Everyone here.”

The FBI arrived in black sedans.

So did Carla’s call.

She had been abducted after leaving her apartment.

Two men held her in a warehouse for five hours, threatened her career, threatened her daughter’s scholarship, took her notes, and dumped her near Route 9 without a car.

She had walked three miles to a payphone.

By then, Agent Marsh was already at the clubhouse.

And then the intercepted call came.

Graves had ordered Plan B.

The second gun was to be moved to Ridgeline Avenue.

Unit 4B.

Ava’s mother.

For one second, Ava’s mind went white.

Diane was still in that apartment.

Diane was damaged, addicted, and confused, but she was still Ava’s mother.

If Carl’s people planted a police weapon there, the raid would bury Diane, protect Graves, and twist the story again.

Ava ran toward the street.

John caught her arm.

“You cannot go there.”

“She is my mother.”

The words were small, stripped of all the bravery she had worn like armor.

John looked at her face and let go.

“Then I am going with you.”

They rode in Duke’s truck behind federal vehicles cutting through Millhaven traffic.

The city looked absurdly normal.

People walked dogs.

A man carried groceries.

A woman unlocked a bakery.

Ava pressed her forehead to the glass and watched the life she had been locked out of passing by in ordinary colors.

Ridgeline Avenue appeared too soon.

The building was exactly as she remembered.

Peeling yellow paint.

Loose railing.

A front step stained by old rain.

The place where her childhood had narrowed into survival.

Federal agents were already moving.

Marsh came out with Diane wrapped in a gray bathrobe, blinking into the morning light.

For three seconds, Diane did not recognize her daughter.

Then her face cracked.

“Ava?”

The name sounded like a question and an apology.

Ava walked toward her slowly.

She did not run.

She did not collapse.

She stopped two feet away.

“Are you okay?”

Diane began to cry.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“I’m so sorry.”

Ava looked at the woman who had failed her and loved her and lost herself.

“I know,” she said.

Then agents brought Carl Redding out in handcuffs.

He was not wearing polished boots or a tactical jacket.

He was in sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Without the costume, without the controlled walk, he looked smaller than the damage he had caused.

Ava expected to feel rage.

Instead, she felt clarity.

Some people were not monsters in the grand way stories make monsters.

Some people were small men who chose harm again and again until harm became their shape.

Marsh confirmed they found the second weapon beneath the bathroom sink.

Department issue Glock.

Clean bag.

Deliberate placement.

A prepaid phone with messages traced to Graves’s campaign office.

Graves was arrested at his headquarters while destroying documents.

Carla was safe.

Coyote would have to testify.

Felt would cooperate.

The machine Russell Graves built began to come apart.

Over the next 72 hours, federal agents executed warrants at Graves’s campaign office, Ashcroft Partners, and Felt’s home.

Wendy’s records, Carla’s testimony, Ava’s witness statement, Felt’s cooperation, and the audio recording created a case too complete to dismiss.

The town learned what had really happened.

The Iron Ridge Riders were not the danger on Henderson Avenue.

They were the target.

Graves had used fear to prepare people to believe a lie.

Carl Redding was charged with conspiracy, evidence tampering, domestic violence, and crimes connected to Carla’s abduction.

He did not make bail.

Diane entered a treatment program in Carver City.

John paid for it quietly.

Ava found out from Duke because Duke believed gratitude should not be hidden.

Coyote stood before the full membership and confessed everything.

His VP patch was removed.

He was allowed to stay, but not as the man he had been.
