“You sound like Caleb.”

Noah closed his eyes.

“You sound nothing like I remember.”

“That’s because last time you heard me I was twenty-two and knew everything.”

Noah laughed through tears.

“I’ve spent half my life thinking you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you call?”

Eli was silent.

“Because every year I waited made the next year harder.”

Noah looked toward the mine.

“Dad thought you died down there.”

“I know.”

“He blamed himself.”

“I know.”

“How could you let him?”

Eli did not answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was quiet.

“Because I was young enough to believe shame was something you could outrun.”

“It isn’t.”

Noah wiped his eyes.

“He died believing he failed you.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t give him those years back.”

“No.”

Eli did not defend himself.

That mattered.

“I have no excuse worth twenty-seven years.”

“I was afraid.”

“Then I got used to being afraid.”

Noah looked at Anna.

She reached for the phone.

“Eli?”

The man on the other end stopped breathing.

“Anna?”

“Yes.”

His voice broke.

“I have wanted to say your name for a very long time.”

“Then say it now.”

“Anna.”

She closed her eyes.

“Were you with my father when he died?”

“Yes.”

“Was he alone?”

“No.”

“Was he scared?”

Eli took a long breath.

“He was worried.”

“About what?”

“You.”

Anna pressed her fingers to her lips.

“He kept saying he had promised to take you fishing.”

A laugh escaped her.

“He hated fishing.”

“He told me.”

“He said you loved it and he hated worms.”

“That sounds like him?”

Anna nodded even though Eli could not see her.

“Yes.”

“His fever got worse.”

“He knew what was happening.”

“He asked me to remember three things.”

“What?”

“That he loved Ruth.”

“That he loved you.”

“And that he had come home.”

Anna’s tears fell.

“Why did that matter so much to him?”

“Because he said one day you might hear a story that made you think he didn’t.”

Anna bowed her head.

“He knew.”

“I think he knew people simplify things when they’re hurting.”

Eli paused.

“He wanted you to know he saw you one last time.”

“He said you woke up and complained that his jacket smelled terrible.”

Anna laughed through her tears.

“Like rain.”

“Yes.”

Memory returned then.

Not as a photograph.

As warmth.

Her father lifting her.

Rain tapping against the window.

Her cheek against his chest.

His tired laugh.

Her own sleepy voice asking whether he was staying home tomorrow.

And an answer.

I’m coming back, peanut.

Anna whispered, “I remember.”

Eli heard her.

“What?”

“I remember him.”

For twenty-seven years, she had believed her final memory of Thomas was imaginary.

Now it belonged to her again.

Her father had come home.

He had held her.

He had laughed.

He had promised what he fully intended to keep.

Life had broken the promise.

He had not.

Sometimes healing was not discovering that nothing terrible had happened.

Sometimes healing was finally understanding what the terrible thing actually meant.

Anna spoke with Eli for nearly an hour.

Noah spoke with him longer.

There were painful questions.

There were answers neither man liked.

There were silences.

There was anger.

There was also, slowly, something that sounded like the beginning of a road home.

Eli agreed to come to Kentucky the following week.

He did not ask for forgiveness.

Noah did not offer it.

They simply agreed to meet.

For now, that was enough.

The county sealed the dangerous sections of Cedar Hollow after investigators documented them.

Thomas Mercer’s remains were eventually identified in the chamber beside the eastern passage.

He was brought home publicly this time.

Not with spectacle.

Not with crowds demanding a villain.

With family.

With neighbors.

With miners who remembered his name.

Caleb Reed’s name was included at Anna’s request in the memorial account.

So was Eli’s.
