“Apparently she’s coming to Kentucky.”

“On purpose?”

“Hard to believe.”

Lily ran toward him.

“Does she have light-up boots?”

“I sincerely hope not.”

The bikers prepared to leave.

Engines came alive one by one.

The quiet woods filled with their low thunder.

This time Lily did not fear the sound.

She stood beside her mother and waved.

Noah and Eli stood together a short distance away.

Not close enough to pretend everything had healed.

Close enough to show they intended to try.

Colter fastened his helmet.

Before mounting his motorcycle, he looked once more toward Cedar Hollow.

The place had frightened them because they thought something monstrous waited inside.

In a way, something had.

Fear.

Guilt.

Silence.

Years people could never recover.

But the woods had held something else too.

A father’s last promise.

A mother’s confession.

A frightened man’s chance to return.

A little girl’s courage.

And proof that even after years of darkness, there could still be a path leading out.

Colter started his motorcycle.

Tess pulled alongside him.

“Ready?”

He looked toward the highway.

“Yeah.”

The convoy rolled forward.

Anna held Lily’s hand as the motorcycles disappeared beyond the trees.

Lily waited until the final engine faded.

Then she looked up.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Was Grandpa Thomas brave?”

Anna considered the question carefully.

She had learned enough about family stories to know that simple answers could become dangerous things.

“He was scared sometimes.”

Lily frowned.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Anna smiled.

“I know.”

She knelt beside her daughter.

“Yes.”

“He was brave.”

“Because he went back?”

“Partly.”

“What’s the other part?”

Anna looked at Ruth’s marker.

Then at Noah.

Then at Eli.

Then toward the empty highway where Colter and the riders had vanished.

“Because he loved people enough to let them matter.”

Lily thought about that.

“Were you brave?”

Anna laughed softly.

“Sometimes.”

“Was Grandma?”

Anna looked at the words Ruth had left behind.

Cowardice can become routine if you practice it long enough.

Her mother had waited too long.

She had made mistakes.

She had also eventually made a choice to leave a door open for truth.

“Yes.”

Anna said.

“In the end, I think she was.”

Lily nodded.

“Am I brave?”

Anna kissed her forehead.

“You ran barefoot onto a highway and stopped twelve motorcycles.”

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

“You’re doing the parent thing.”

“What parent thing?”

“Where you make the answer too long.”

Anna laughed.

“Yes, Lily.”

“You are brave.”

They began walking toward the cars.

After several steps, Lily stopped.

She turned toward Cedar Hollow.

“What?”

Anna asked.

“I forgot something.”

“What?”

Lily ran back to the memorial.

She removed one purple boot.

Then the other.

Anna stared.

“Lily Mercer.”

“I’ll put them back on.”

“Why are they off?”

Lily stood barefoot in the grass.

“Because this is how Grandpa’s story found us.”

Anna looked at her daughter.

The sunlight caught the tears in her eyes before they fell.

Lily placed one small hand against Thomas’s memorial stone.

“Hi, Grandpa.”

The woods moved gently in the wind.

No mysterious voice answered.

No impossible sign appeared.

Only leaves.

Birdsong.

Morning sunlight.

And that was enough.

Lily put her boots back on.

She took her mother’s hand.

Together they walked away from Cedar Hollow.

Neither looked back.

They did not need to.

The truth was no longer buried there.

They were carrying it home.
