"He drew a firearm on an unarmed citizen," Headmaster Sterling interrupted, his voice quavering but loud enough to turn heads. He stood at the bottom step now, his gray wool scarf askew, his patrician face flushed with outrage. "Sergeant Concincaid, you pointed a loaded weapon in the presence of forty children! I saw it with my own eyes!"

Concincaid turned his head slowly, fixing Sterling with a heavy, dead-eyed stare that made the educator flinch. "You saw me respond to an uncooperative subject who made a furtive reach into his jacket, Dr. Sterling. As security director, my mandate is to eliminate potential active threats before they enter your building. If you have concerns about standard procedure, you can address them at the precinct community council meeting next Tuesday."

It was a clinic in institutional gaslighting. He was already drafting the narrative, already laying down the tarmac for an official report that would frame me as an aggressive trespasser and him as the vigilant protector.

"Dr. Sterling," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through Concincaid’s performance.

The headmaster looked at me, his eyes wide and panicked.

"Take my daughter into your private office," I said. "Lock the door. She stays with you or the primary school counselor until I personally come through that entrance to retrieve her. If any member of this security detail or any officer without a federal warrant approaches her, you call the United States Marshals Service command post at Foley Square immediately. The number is on the back of this card."

I pulled a crisp business card from my pocket and pressed it into Sterling’s palm. The heavy gold-embossed seal of the Department of Justice caught the morning light.

"Of course, Mr. Thorne," Sterling breathed, visibly relieved to have an exit from the immediate line of fire. He knelt down beside Maya, his voice softening into the gentle tone he used for school assemblies. "Come along, Maya. Let's go see the greenhouse on the fourth floor. You can show me your watercolor."

Maya looked up at me, her brown eyes wet, her lower lip trembling. "Daddy, please come with me."

I knelt down on both knees so I was eye-to-eye with her. I took her small hands in mine, rubbing warmth back into her fingers. "I have to make a couple of phone calls for work, bug. You know how work gets. But I am right outside. Nobody is getting past those doors, and nobody is ever going to scare you like that again. Do you trust me?"

She swallowed hard, looking at the purple backpack I had zipped back up for her. "I trust you."

"Go with Dr. Sterling. I’ll see you in just a little bit."

She gave my neck a fierce, desperate squeeze before taking the headmaster's hand. I watched them pass through the heavy oak doors, the brass latch clicking shut with finality.
