The little girl had managed to escape from the van briefly at the gas station.

That was when she found Graham.

The officers searched the vehicle.

They found forged documents, multiple phones, and photographs of other children.

The case suddenly became much larger.

Graham sat on the curb while an officer took his statement.

“You followed them alone?”

Graham nodded.

“That was dangerous.”

“I know.”

“Why did you do it?”

Graham looked toward Lacey.

“She asked.”

The officer smiled sadly.

“Sometimes that's enough.”

But the biggest surprise came later.

When investigators contacted Lacey's mother, the woman arrived with an attorney.

She was crying before she even reached her daughter.

She hugged Lacey.

Then she turned to Graham.

“You don't know what you've done for us.”

Graham shook his head.

“I just stopped for gas.”

“No,” she said.

“You stopped when everyone else could have kept driving.

CHAPTER 5 — THE NAME ON THE FILE

The investigation continued for weeks.

Victor Hale was charged with kidnapping and document fraud.

The teenager recovered.

The transportation company was searched.

Investigators discovered a network that had exploited gaps in custody records and moved children between jurisdictions using forged paperwork.

Graham expected the story to end there.

It didn't.

One afternoon, a federal investigator visited him.

He carried a thin folder.
