She laughed.

Her mother approached more slowly.

“We wanted to thank you again.”

Graham shook his head.

“You already did.”

Lacey reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a small piece of paper.

Graham opened it.

This time, the words were different.

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING.

Graham folded it carefully.

Then Lacey looked at him.

“I have something else to tell you.”

“What?”

She smiled.

“The investigators found my aunt.”

Graham stared at her.

“Your aunt?”

Lacey nodded.

“The woman in the old photograph.”

Graham's breath caught.

The missing child from his sister's story had been found alive.

The investigation had not only rescued Lacey.

It had reopened a twenty-year-old mystery and brought a family member home.

Graham looked at the little girl who had once been too frightened to speak.

“You know,” he said, “you were very brave.”

Lacey shook her head.

“I was scared.”

Graham smiled.

“Being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared.”

He looked toward the highway.

“It means you ask for help anyway.”

The motorcycle started.

The sun was rising over the road.

And Graham rode away knowing that, sometimes, the smallest decision—stopping at a gas station instead of driving past—can change far more lives than you will ever know.
