THE FOUNDERβS VISIT
Chapter I: The Glass Tower and the Faded Coat
The atrium of St. Jude Metropolitan Medical Center was a cathedral of cutting-edge modern medicine. Four-story vaulted glass ceilings looked out onto the sprawling downtown skyline, illuminated by soft recessed spotlights that reflected off flawless white porcelain tiles. High-level executives, senior surgeons in tailored scrubs, and pharmaceutical lobbyists walked briskly through the security turnstiles, their footsteps echoing with practiced importance.
Standing near the primary visitor reception desk was Clara Vance.
At seventy-four, Clara wore an oversized, faded olive wool trench coat with dark wooden buttons, comfortable orthopedic walking shoes, and carried a simple worn leather shoulder bag. Her silver hair was neatly pinned back, framing a face lined with deep wisdom and quiet observation. There were no diamonds on her fingers, no designer logos on her bag, and no security detail clearing a path for her.
Behind the marble reception desk stood Emily, a twenty-two-year-old frontline guest services receptionist with bright red hair tied in a neat ponytail and an approachable smile.
Clara approached the counter, leaning forward slightly:
"Excuse me, dear. I need to see the hospital director."
Emily looked up warmly, setting down her pen. "Do you have an appointment, ma'am?"
"No, I don't," Clara replied softly. "I just arrived in town."
Before Emily could check the open guest registry, sharp footsteps clicked aggressively across the marble floor.
