Tessa heard her.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
"That's what you always say."
Tessa stepped into Maya's path. Maya moved left. Tessa moved left too.
"Let me through."
"Why? You have somewhere important to be?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Maya held the wet notebook against her chest. "Class."
Tessa smiled. "You're not going to class looking like that."
Maya glanced down at her hoodie. Lemonade had soaked the front of it. Tessa had splashed her on purpose, then stepped back to admire the stain.
A few students had stopped near the cafeteria doors. Nobody came closer. One boy raised his phone, and another student whispered that someone should call an RA.
Maya saw the camera.
She also saw Tessa notice it.
"Go ahead," Tessa said. "Make a scene."
"You already did."
Tessa's smile vanished.
She shoved Maya's shoulder.
It was not enough to knock her down, but it pushed her back against the picnic table. The metal edge struck her hip. Pain flashed through her side.
Maya steadied herself.
"Don't touch me."
Tessa shoved her again. "Or what?"
Maya pushed Tessa's hands away. "I said don't touch me."
The movement was quick, defensive, and smaller than what happened next.
