"But they cornered me," Maya continued. "They shoved me first. Tessa grabbed my hoodie. Nia held me from behind."
Tessa folded her arms. "That's not what happened."
Maya reached for her phone. The screen stayed black.
For months, she had tried to survive by staying quiet. She had deleted messages, ignored hallway comments, and told herself that reporting them would only make everything worse.
Now Tessa was already rewriting the story in front of witnesses.
Maya looked at Paige again.
Paige was staring at the ground.
"Did you see what happened?" the adviser asked her.
Paige swallowed.
Tessa turned toward her. "Be careful."
That warning told Maya everything.
Tessa had not just ruined lunch. She was counting on everyone else being too frightened, embarrassed, or loyal to tell the truth.
Maya felt the sting in her cheek and the ache in her hip. She thought about the broken backpack strap. The ruined notes. The messages she had saved but never shown anyone.
Then she remembered one detail she had almost forgotten.
The first time Tessa cornered her, the security camera above the cafeteria doors had been pointed directly at the tables.
Maya looked up at it now.
The red recording light was still on.
She picked up her backpack and faced the adviser.
"I want to file a report," Maya said.
Tessa laughed. "For what? A spilled drink?"
Maya met her eyes.
"For all of it."
The adviser reached for a notepad. The security officer asked Maya to come inside and give her statement. Behind them, students began replaying the video on their phones.
Maya took one breath.
