THE DUST AT MILLER RANCH
Chapter I: The Shove on the Gravel
The harsh afternoon sun blazed over the dry perimeter gate of the historic Miller Ranch, kicking up dust devils across the vast, open pasture. Parked on the gravel path was a classic sky-blue Ford pickup truck, its faded paint bearing the marks of decades of honest labor.
Standing right at the driver's door was Officer Briggs, an aggressive, broad-shouldered patrolman in a black uniform and gold badge.
"Leave the property!" Briggs roared, grabbing Frank by the collar of his utility vest and shoving him with violent force.
Frank, an elderly veteran with a missing left arm from his service days, lost his balance. He slammed hard against the gravel beside the front tire of his blue truck, cutting his hand against the sharp stones.
Standing smugly behind the officer, wearing an expensive charcoal tailored suit and an unbuttoned white dress shirt, was Bradley Sterling—the corrupt real estate developer who had spent months attempting to bulldoze the valley for a private resort. Sterling smiled with cold, ruthless amusement.
Frank leaned against the truck's front wheel, wiping the blood from his palm, his piercing gray eyes burning with quiet, unyielding fury.
"This is my land," Frank said in a low, gravelly rasp.
