Thomas slowly lowered the phone. He turned to Victoria, his eyes the color of cold steel. And as he reached back into his coat, the nightmare for Miller's Corner Diner officially began.

Victoria Collins was not a woman accustomed to being ignored. Her face flushed with indignation as she slammed her hand against the laminate tabletop, startling Martha.

"Excuse me," Victoria hissed, leaning close to Thomas. "I don't care who is on that phone. You owe four dollars and twelve cents. Pay it right now."

Thomas ended his call with a single tap. He finally looked at Victoria.

His eyes were terrifying. They were devoid of warmth, stripping away Victoria’s arrogance until it fractured. A sudden, inexplicable chill ran down her spine. Without breaking eye contact, Thomas reached into his pocket once more.

He didn't pull out the cracked leather wallet.

He pulled out a heavy, matte-black titanium credit card. No limit printed. No standard bank logos. It was a card issued exclusively to individuals whose net worth eclipsed the GDP of small nations.

He tossed it onto the table. It landed with a solid clack against the wood.

"Take the four dollars," Thomas said, his voice quiet but echoing with undeniable menace. "Then, use whatever is left on that card to buy this entire building. Because by tomorrow morning, you won't just be fired, Miss Collins. You will never work in this city again."

Victoria stared at the black card. The color drained from her face, leaving her pale and trembling. She opened her mouth to yell, but her voice failed. She stumbled backward, bumping into a chair.

Thomas ignored her retreat. He turned his attention to Kevin, a young waiter standing frozen near the coffee station.

"You, son," Thomas commanded.

Kevin jumped. "Y-yes, sir?"

"That young woman who was just fired," Thomas said, pointing toward the rainy street. "What is her full name?"

Kevin swallowed hard. "It’s Vance, sir. Chloe Vance."

The moment the surname left Kevin's lips, Thomas stopped breathing. His entire body went rigid. The invulnerable billionaire facade cracked, revealing a man struck by lightning.

Vance.

Martha gasped aloud, covering her mouth. "Thomas... dear God, it can't be."

Thomas’s hands began to shake violently. He reached into the old leather wallet on the table, digging into a hidden pocket. He carefully extracted a small, severely faded photograph and laid it flat next to the titanium card.

The picture was twenty years old. It showed a younger Thomas Lawson, dressed in a sharp suit, standing outside Lawson Development’s corporate headquarters. Beside him stood a young woman with dark chestnut hair and quiet strength in her eyes.

"Sarah," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking with a grief he had carried for two decades. "Her name was Sarah Vance."

Kevin leaned in, frowning. "That looks exactly like Chloe."

Thomas closed his eyes. The realization hit him like a freight train. He had spent months employing investigators to find the daughter of the woman his empire had wrongfully destroyed. And she had been right here. Paying for his meal.

Martha placed her hand over his. "Thomas... she used her own money to feed us. After everything we took from her mother."

Thomas opened his eyes. The grief vanished, replaced by a burning resolve. He grabbed his cane.
