“Get out and take your bastards with you!” my mother-in-law, Denise, shrieked through the glass. She spat before the door closed, the wet mark sliding down my cheek.

**Chapter Two: The Awakening**

I turned away from the window, forcing my frozen, bleeding feet to carry me across the snow-covered stone toward the detached garage. Above the heavy carriage doors, a red security camera blinked steadily in the dark. Daniel had forgotten many things, but most fatally, he had forgotten that this state-of-the-art security system recorded crystal-clear audio. He had also forgotten that the house, the luxury cars in the driveway, and every single company device he used belonged to corporate entities entirely controlled by me.

I shifted Noah’s weight, freeing my left wrist, and pressed the flush, hidden emergency button on my smartwatch.

The device vibrated once. A crisp, professional voice answered instantly through the tiny speaker.

"Ms. Vale?"

"Lena," I said, my voice eerily calm as I watched Daniel pour two glasses of vintage champagne through the living room window. "Activate maternal security protocol. Dispatch a private ambulance and local police to the residence immediately. Preserve and backup every camera feed and audio log from the last three hours."

There was a fraction of a second's pause on the line. Lena was my chief of staff, a woman who moved markets and managed crises before breakfast. She heard the wind howling and the babies crying in the background.

"Consider it done, ma'am," Lena said, her tone dropping in temperature. "Do you also authorize corporate action?"

Inside the warm house, Denise raised her champagne flute to me through the frost-edged window, a mocking toast to my supposed destruction.

"Yes," I breathed, wiping a mixture of freezing snow and Denise’s earlier spit from my cheek. "Freeze Daniel’s executive access globally. Lock him out of the servers. Initiate a forensic audit of his entire division. Repossess all trust-owned vehicles at dawn."

"And the residence, Ms. Vale?"

"Serve notice according to the strict terms of the occupancy agreement."

"Executing now."

I didn't move from the cold. I stood in the dark and watched. Five seconds later, the house responded. The warm, inviting glow of the chandelier suddenly flickered, plunging the living room into pitch black before the harsh, blinding white security floodlights snapped on. The smart-locks on every door in the house engaged simultaneously with a loud, mechanical slam that echoed through the property. The heating system’s exhaust fans abruptly cut off, shifting entirely to remote override.

Daniel’s smug smile vanished. He dropped his champagne glass. It shattered across the hardwood floor, though I couldn't hear the sound.

For the first time that entire night, the corners of my mouth lifted into a smile.

**Chapter Three: The Aftermath**

The wail of sirens cut through the blizzard long before the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the snowbanks. Paramedics spilled out of the ambulance, immediately wrapping me and the twins in thick, heated Mylar blankets. The inside of the ambulance was an oasis of heat, but the damage was already done. Emma’s core temperature had fallen dangerously low, her tiny lips tinged with a terrifying shade of blue. Noah was shivering so violently that his tiny chin clicked rhythmically against my collarbone.
