"You know I didn’t mean it," his voice hardened, dropping the placating tone and shifting back to the bully I had finally recognized. "Drop the charges right now, or I swear to God, Mara, I’ll cancel your credit cards and take full custody of those kids. No judge in this state gives twins to a broke, hysterical woman with no real career. You have nothing without me."
From my hospital bed, I watched a live security feed on Lena’s encrypted tablet. Three heavy-duty tow trucks were currently reversing down our snow-cleared driveway.
"Try," I whispered, and hung up.
Across town, Daniel was released on bail pending a formal hearing. He took an expensive cab back to the estate, expecting to walk in, comfort his mother, and strategize his divorce. He expected the smart-locks to recognize his phone and let him into his kingdom.
They did not. The door flashed red.
A grim-faced process server stood waiting on the porch, flanked by two armed private security contractors. Denise was already outside, shivering in a winter coat, waving her printed occupancy agreement wildly in the server's face.
"This is my son’s house! You cannot do this!" she shrieked.
The server calmly pointed to the first page of the document she was holding. "Ma'am, this property is exclusively owned by Vale Meridian Residential Trust. Your occupancy license has been formally revoked due to on-premises violence and gross property misuse. You have exactly seventy-two hours to remove your personal belongings under armed supervision, starting now."
Daniel marched up the steps, reaching into his pocket for his car keys. "Forget the house for a second, mom. We're going to my office. I'll get legal on this."
A burly repossession agent stepped out from behind a tow truck and held out a gloved hand. "I'll take those keys, sir. The Bentley, the Range Rover, and the Mercedes are all registered corporate assets."
"My Mercedes?" Denise gasped, clutching her chest.
"Also a company asset, ma'am. They are being reclaimed."
Furious, Daniel pulled out his company smartphone to call his lawyer. The screen was pitch black. He pressed the power button, and a single, stark white message appeared on the screen: **ACCESS DENIED. SUSPENDED PENDING FRAUD INVESTIGATION.**
**Chapter Five: The Corporate Guillotine**
Panic finally pierced Daniel's armor. At Vale Meridian’s towering glass headquarters downtown, Lena’s auditors had already spent the night tearing through the servers like wolves. Daniel had always believed he was a brilliant, rising vice president at Northstar Automotive, climbing the ladder purely on his own genius. Northstar was actually one of my smaller, more tedious acquisitions. I had personally approved his promotion three years ago, foolishly wanting him to succeed on his own merit, to feel like an equal partner in our marriage.
Instead, the audit revealed a trail of staggering arrogance. He had used company funds for luxury international trips with Celeste, falsified vendor invoices to cover his tracks, and worst of all, routed lucrative consulting contracts to a phantom shell company owned entirely by Denise.
The evidence was absolute. Lena only needed my final authorization to pull the trigger.
Standing on the freezing driveway, Daniel borrowed his mother's phone and dialed his regional president at Northstar. The man answered on the first ring.
