The drive to the Sterling Automotive Group headquarters had been quiet. Rain streaked the windows of my SUV, blurring the neon lights of downtown Seattle into long, glowing ribbons. In the backseat, Leo was fast asleep, his head resting against his car seat.

I looked at him through the rearview mirror, feeling the familiar, heavy ache in my chest. He had his mother’s dark curls and her long eyelashes. Every time I looked at him, I saw Elena.

Elena had been a brilliant automotive engineer. She had spent the last three years of her life designing the aerodynamics of the Aethelgard Apex, pouring her soul into every curve and intake. She used to joke that the car was our second child. But she never lived to see it roll off the production line. A sudden illness had taken her from us eight months ago, leaving a void in my life that no amount of money could ever fill.

After her passing, the board of Sterling Automotive had tried to scrap her design, claiming it was too expensive to produce. They didn't know I had spent the last five years quietly building a venture capital firm that specialized in hostile takeovers. I didn't just fight their decision. I bought the entire company.

Tonight was the VIP unveiling of the Apex concept model. I had arranged the acquisition through blind trusts and proxy lawyers. To the public, and to the employees of Sterling Automotive, the new majority shareholder was a faceless corporate entity. I wanted it that way. I wanted to walk into this gala unannounced, to see firsthand who was running my wife’s legacy and how they were treating it.

I parked the SUV a few blocks away from the massive glass-and-steel headquarters and gently woke Leo.

"Hey, buddy," I said softly, unbuckling his harness. "We're here. Ready to see Mommy's car?"

Leo rubbed his eyes and nodded, a sleepy smile spreading across his face.

We walked through the grand glass doors of the lobby. The atmosphere was suffocatingly opulent. Waiters in white coats drifted through the crowd, carrying trays of champagne and caviar. The attendees were a sea of designer gowns, custom tuxedos, and inherited wealth. They spoke in hushed, arrogant tones, glancing dismissively at anyone who didn't look like they belonged on a yacht in Monaco.

I held Leo’s hand tightly as we navigated the crowd. I had intentionally dressed down. My charcoal suit was tailored but entirely unbranded. No silk pocket square, no fifty-thousand-dollar watch, no diamond cufflinks. I wanted to be invisible.

As we approached the center of the showroom, the crowd parted slightly, revealing the centerpiece of the evening.

The Aethelgard Apex.

It was beautiful. The silver paint seemed to absorb and radiate the ambient light, giving the vehicle a predatory, liquid grace. Elena’s signature aerodynamic lines swept from the low nose over the roofline, terminating in a sharp, elegant tail. It was exactly as she had drawn it in her notebooks.

A lump formed in my throat. I stood there for a long moment, lost in the memory of Elena sitting at our kitchen table, sketching those very lines late into the night.

Leo felt the shift in my mood. He tugged gently on my hand. "Is that it, Dad? Is that Mommy's?"

"Yeah, Leo," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "That's hers."

Leo let go of my hand and took two small steps forward. The velvet ropes had been temporarily moved aside for the VIPs to get a closer look. Leo stopped inches from the front left fender. He looked up at the massive machine, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and recognition.

Before I could tell him to be careful, he reached out his small hand and placed it flat against the cool silver metal of the fender.

It was an innocent gesture. A boy connecting with his mother’s ghost.

"Hey! What are you doing?"

The voice was sharp, loud, and dripping with authority.
