A man in a sleek black suit lunged from the shadows behind the vehicle. He didn't ask Leo to step back. He didn't try to intervene gently. He reached out and grabbed Leo's wrist, his fingers digging into my son’s small arm, yanking him forcefully away from the car.

"Don't touch the paint," the man hissed, his face twisted in an ugly sneer.

Leo gasped, stumbling backward. He looked up at the man, terrified, clutching his wrist against his chest as tears sprang to his eyes.

The physical reaction in my body was instantaneous. A cold, heavy weight dropped into my stomach, followed immediately by a surge of pure, blinding adrenaline. The ambient noise of the gala faded into a dull roar in my ears.

I closed the distance in two strides.

I stepped entirely between the man and Leo, using my body as a physical shield. I locked my eyes onto the man’s face. He was in his early thirties, with slicked-back hair and a custom-tailored suit that hugged his frame tightly. A silver nametag gleamed on his lapel. Preston. Senior Event Director.

Preston didn't back down. He looked me up and down, his eyes scanning my unbranded suit, my lack of jewelry, and Leo’s simple clothes. His lip curled upward in absolute disdain.

"Is this your kid?" Preston demanded, raising his voice so the surrounding guests could hear.

I didn't answer immediately. I kept my breathing slow, my hands open but ready by my sides. "Take your hand off him."

Preston scoffed, adjusting his cuffs with an arrogant flick of his wrists. "This is an exclusive unveiling for preferred clients. Not a petting zoo. I don't know how you slipped past the front desk, but you need to control your child."

I looked at Leo over my shoulder. He was shaking, hiding behind my leg. The sight of his fear made the muscles in my jaw tighten until my teeth ached.

"He was admiring the vehicle," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "There was no need to put your hands on him."

"There is every need," Preston countered, taking a step forward to invade my space. He pointed a manicured finger at the Apex. "Do you have any idea what this vehicle represents? Do you have any idea how much it costs? One scratch from his dirty hands, and you'd be working for the rest of your miserable life just to pay for the buffing compound."

A few of the nearby guests chuckled softly, enjoying the show. I could feel their judgmental eyes boring into my back.

I looked closer at Preston. Something was wrong. Beyond the sheer arrogance, there was a nervous, defensive energy radiating from him. His eyes kept darting past me, specifically toward the trunk of the Apex, as if he was terrified someone might look too closely at the rear of the car.

Then, my eyes drifted to his left wrist as he adjusted his jacket again.

Peeking out from under his crisp white cuff was a heavy, brushed-titanium chronograph with a distinctive blue dial. I recognized it instantly. It was a limited-edition Sterling timepiece, one of only five ever made for the board of directors. The internal audit I had reviewed yesterday stated that two of those watches had recently been reported missing from the company's private vault.

Preston noticed me looking at his wrist and quickly shoved his hand into his pocket.

"I'm not going to ask you again," Preston said, snapping his fingers in the air. Immediately, a massive man wearing a dark suit and an earpiece stepped out from the crowd, positioning himself exactly two steps behind Preston. The security guard folded his arms, his bulk creating a clear physical threat.

"One more incident," Preston warned, a cruel, victorious smile spreading across his face, "and I'm throwing both of you out onto the street where you belong."

He thought the presence of the guard would make me cower. He thought I would apologize, grab my son, and run out the back door in shame.

Instead, I reached slowly into the inner pocket of my jacket.
