Before Victoria could unleash another insult, the low, synchronized rumble of high-powered V8 engines shook the barn floorboards.
Rounding the dirt driveway in a cloud of dust were four black-and-gold State Highway Patrol interceptors, followed immediately by two unmarked Department of Agriculture tactical SUVs. Flashing red, blue, and amber strobe lights painted the weathered barn walls in emergency colors.
Victoria’s arrogant grin froze.

Victoria rushed forward, waving her papers: "Officers! Perfect timing! I am HOA President Victoria Vance—I'm executing a court-ordered foreclosure on this non-compliant parcel—"
The Lead State Investigator stepped right past her, unbuttoning his suit jacket to reveal his state badge.
