Then another.
She took a job at a law office during the day.
At night, she worked at the restaurant.
Eventually, she left the law office because the restaurant offered more consistent hours.
She told herself she would return to school.
She never did.
Not because she couldn't.
Because life kept presenting emergencies.
And Naomi became very good at surviving emergencies.
Her father, James Carter, was sixty-seven now.
He lived in a modest house outside the city.
His illness had weakened him, but his mind remained sharp.
When Naomi arrived that morning, he was sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper.
“You look tired.”
Naomi put down her bag.
“I had an interesting night.”
James looked over his glasses.
“Interesting good or interesting bad?”
“Both.”
She told him everything.
When she finished, her father was silent.
Then he smiled.
“Your mother would have loved that.”
Naomi laughed.
“She would have embarrassed me.”
“She would have corrected your Mandarin.”
“She would have corrected everyone else's Mandarin too.”
James laughed.
Then his expression became serious.
“What are you going to do with the money?”
“I don't know.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Naomi looked at him.
“You asked what I'm going to do with it.”
“No.”
He pointed toward her.
“I asked what you're going to do with what happened.”
Naomi frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“You spent years believing that your life had been put on hold.”
James folded the newspaper.
“Maybe it wasn't.”
Naomi looked away.
Her father continued.
“Maybe you were learning.”
“Learning what?”
“What you actually want.”
Naomi didn't answer.
Her phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
She answered.
“Hello?”
“Ms. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“This is Henry Lin.”
Naomi straightened.
“Mr. Lin.”
“I hope I'm not calling too early.”
“No.”
“I'd like to meet you.”
“About the restaurant?”
“No.”
He paused.
“About your future.”
They met at a small café overlooking the bay.
Naomi arrived ten minutes early.
Henry Lin was already there.
He stood when she approached.
“Ms. Carter.”
“Mr. Lin.”
He gestured toward the chair.
“Please.”
Naomi sat.
Henry ordered tea for both of them.
For several moments, neither spoke.
Finally, Henry said:
“I have a question.”
“All right.”
“Why did you become a waitress?”
