The metal casing surrounding the lock warped and bent. Sweat poured into my eyes, but I didn't stop. I brought the wrench down a third time, putting my entire body weight behind it. With a sharp snap, the locking mechanism finally gave way.
I dropped the wrench and jammed my fingers under the lip of the trunk, heaving it upward. As the lid swung open, a wave of stagnant, blistering heat washed over us.
The entire crowd froze in absolute horror.
A young woman lay curled in the fetal position in the cramped space. Her clothes were entirely soaked in sweat, clinging to her trembling body. She was taking shallow, ragged breaths, her eyes barely able to flutter open against the sudden influx of blinding light.
Her wrists were bound tightly together with thick plastic zip ties, and a wide strip of silver duct tape was plastered across her mouth.
"Oh my god," the elderly woman gasped.
Action replaced shock. Several people, including myself, immediately rushed forward. A man with a pocket knife carefully severed the thick plastic ties binding her wrists, while I gently peeled the suffocating tape from her mouth.
We supported her by her shoulders and arms, carefully lifting her out of the scorching metal box. Her legs gave out instantly; she was far too weak to stand. We laid her gently in the shade of a nearby storefront awning. Someone produced a bottle of cold water, tipping it carefully against her lips so she could take slow, desperate sips.
As the cool water hit her throat, the shock began to wear off, and she broke down into quiet, exhausted sobs.
