Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until a police cruiser and an ambulance screeched to a halt beside the sidewalk. Paramedics immediately swarmed the woman, checking her vitals and preparing a stretcher.
As they worked to stabilize her, a police officer knelt beside her, notebook in hand. In a trembling, raspy voice, the woman recounted a nightmare.
She explained that her own husband was the one who had done this. They had gotten into a severe argument that morning. In a fit of rage, he had overpowered her, bound her, and shoved her into the trunk of their car. He had slammed the lid shut and simply walked away to run his errands, leaving her trapped under the scorching sun. He had banked on the fact that in the dead heat of the afternoon, no one would pay a second glance to a normal, parked car.
The police officers' faces hardened as they took down his description. Radios crackled as the search began immediately.
Justice was swift. A few hours later, I received a call from the precinct. They had arrested the husband only a few blocks away. He had been calmly strolling down the avenue, carrying a shopping bag, completely oblivious to the fact that his horrific plan had been entirely unraveled by a passing dog.
Later that evening, as I sat on my porch with a cool breeze finally washing over the neighborhood, I looked down at Rocky. He was gnawing happily on a well-deserved steak bone.
One of the responding officers had pulled me aside before I left the scene earlier that day. His words echoed in my mind.
"If your dog hadn't sensed her... if he hadn't made such a scene... with this heat, she wouldn't have survived another twenty minutes in that trunk."
I reached down and scratched Rocky behind the ears. He hadn't just been a good boy that day; he had been a savior.
