He looked at me.

“I let it happen.”

The sentence hurt.

Yet it also sounded true.

That mattered.

“I should have stopped it,” he said.

“Yes.”

“I should have called you.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t.”

“No.”

He nodded.

I did not comfort him.

He needed the weight of what he had done.

Jessica shook her head.

“This is pathetic.”

Matthew turned toward her.

“What is?”

“This.”

She gestured between us.

“You become a little boy every time she looks disappointed.”

His face tightened.

“You use that against me.”

The words came quietly.

Jessica stopped.

I watched carefully.

“What?” she asked.

“You know exactly when to say that.”

“I’m telling the truth.”

“No.”

He breathed slowly.

“You say it whenever I disagree with you.”

Jessica’s arms dropped.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“You say I’m weak.”

“Because you are being weak.”

“You say I’m controlled by my mother.”

“You are.”

“You say I’ll never build a life unless I stop asking permission.”

“Correct.”

Matthew’s expression changed.

Something exhausted inside him seemed to harden.

“And then you decide what I’m supposed to want.”

Jessica stared.

“I decide?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve carried us for years.”

“I know.”

“I pushed you to apply for better jobs.”

“I know.”

“I handled our bills.”

“I know.”

“I found the apartment.”

“I know.”

“I found this solution.”

There it was.

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Nobody moved.

Jessica realized what she had said.

Matthew looked at me.

I said nothing.

He looked back at her.

“This solution.”

She recovered.

“We found it.”

“You just said you found it.”

“Because you were too scared to suggest anything.”

“I never suggested moving Mom out.”

“You wanted cheaper housing.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“You wanted more space.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“You wanted savings.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Her voice rose.

“You wanted a future!”

“Yes.”

His answer came sharply.

“I did not want hers.”

Silence followed.

It was the first moment that afternoon when Jessica had no immediate reply.

Matthew looked toward the box marked GEORGE.

His eyes shone.

“I kept telling myself we were borrowing space.”

I listened.

“She said we could stay while you were gone.”

Jessica opened her mouth.

“Don’t.”

Matthew’s voice stopped her.

He looked at me.

“She said we’d explain afterward.”

My chest tightened.

“You believed that?”

“No.”

His honesty surprised me.

“I wanted to.”

Jessica scoffed.

“He knew exactly what we were doing.”

Matthew nodded.

“I knew enough.”

He did not hide behind her.

That mattered too.

“I knew it was wrong.”

“Then why?”

He looked exhausted.

“Because every time I said we should wait, she said I was choosing you over our marriage.”

Jessica’s face hardened.

“That is not fair.”

“You said those exact words.”

“You were choosing her.”

“I was asking to talk to my mother before taking her bedroom.”

Jessica looked toward me.

“You see what she’s doing?”

I answered quietly.

“I am watching my son speak.”

Matthew breathed unevenly.

“She said you would say no.”

“I probably would have.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“She said that proved we couldn’t ask.”

“That logic should have warned you.”

“It did.”

“Then why ignore it?”

He looked toward the floor.

“Because I was tired.”

I waited.

“Tired of fighting.”

Jessica gave a bitter laugh.

“So now I forced you?”

Matthew looked at her.

“You didn’t force me.”

That answer surprised everyone.

“I made choices.”

He turned toward me.

“Bad ones.”

Then he looked back at Jessica.

“But they were choices I kept making because disagreeing with you became harder than disappointing everyone else.”

Her face went blank.

He continued.

“I let you decide where we lived.”

“You hated the apartment.”

“I let you handle our money.”

“You were terrible at it.”

“I let you decide which friends were bad for us.”

“They were.”

“I let you decide Mom was controlling.”

“She is.”

“No.”

His voice became firmer.

“She has boundaries.”

Jessica stared at him.

“You’re really picking her.”

Matthew shook his head.

“That’s exactly the trap.”
